It's important to remember that John Culberson, Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee laid the groundwork for revoking federal funds to sanctuary cities in February of last year when he wrote this letter to Loretta Lynch demanding compliance with 8 USC 1373:

She did send a letter to all jurisdictions outlining a new DOJ policy in regard to the above compliance which resulted in this communication from the DOJ Inspector General to the Assistant Attorney General:

It outlines the consequences to jurisdictions refusing to cooperate with ICE officials. This was during the Obama administration, as well. Jeff Sessions will use this authority to great effect.

Lynch's prompt action in complying with the Culberson letter is grim testimony to the awesome power of the Chairman of the Appropriations Committee to bring meaningful economic pressure on agencies of the government. It's also why these cities have reason to worry.

Mixed emotions on this whole thing. I agree something has to be done about illegal immigrants-as in the ones who have made no effort nor ever will to be legal citizens here.
But I also sit back and think in terms of do I really want to be part of a society that will go door to door and yank people out into the streets to march them off? Women, children, elderly, all to fulfill the promise of a disgusting egomaniac who is every kind of "ist' there is?
The answer is no.
What should be done is one last ultimatum in the form of an amnesty period. Illegals have 30 days to go to a location that will be open to take their names and information and put them on the path of becoming a legal tax paying citizen. You will be given a card for doing so, after 30 day period, no card? Goodbye, but in a much more civilized way.

What more civilized way is there? They get arrested for a crime, ICE requests a detainer, they are held then moved to another facility, given a TRIAL and a chance to prove they deserve to stay, then (if the circumstances warrant it) deported to their home country courtesy of the USA taxpayers who fund the whole thing.
Beyond that, NO ONE is suggesting that jack booted thugs kick in doors, pull kids out of the arms of their parents who are then marched to cattle cars and shipped off to some unlisted detention center. What happens is nothing until they break the law in some manner and/or come to the attention of the authorities. At that point see my comment above. Safe, humane, dignified, and uniform treatment for everyone.
Amnesty. It's been done. What happened was the arrival of tidal wave #2 of illegal immigrants who also wanted the same treatment. Then waves #3 and 4 arrived. They ALSO want the same treatment. Plus special bene's.
Beyond that, at what point do you stop and say no more amnesty? AFTER the ones currently here are processed? Isn't that what the first time amnesty was tried was all about? Open that door once and someone will always come late to the party and want the same buffet.
