Based on history of backtracking on statements he's made or outright lies about anything and everything, the Associated Press didn't take Trump at his word that he had distributed millions of dollars to veterans groups. After contacting all 41 groups they found most had received checks only within the past week with most checks dated May 24th.
After performing the investigation which any real news agency should have done, the AP was rewarded by Trump:
He repeatedly criticized the press for making the money an issue, saying reporters "should be ashamed of themselves" for asking where the money had gone.

"Instead of being like, 'Thank you very much, Mr. Trump,' or 'Trump did a good job,' everyone's saying, 'Who got it? Who got it? Who got it?' And you make me look very bad," Trump complained, taking on reporters in the room. "I have never received such bad publicity for doing such a good job.
Apparently in Trump's fantasy world, accounting where money is spent isn't a big deal though that would explain much about his 7 bankruptcies.
