Trump defends lies by comparing himself to wartime heroes — but he’s a lot closer to the Nazi apologists

Trump compared his public lies about the seriousness of the pandemic to FDR’s famous “fear itself” quote and falsely claimed that Churchill gave speeches from the rooftops when “Hitler was bombing London.”

Who among us can forget when Churchill reassured the British public that “one day … like a miracle” the Nazis “will disappear”?

Or when FDR, in addressing the nation after the Pearl Harbor attacks, insisted that “99%” of the bombings were “totally harmless” and fears about the spread of fascism were a “new hoax” perpetuated by shady deep-state conspirators?

Jokes aside, it’s obviously preposterous of Trump to try to make this claim. As numerous commenters pointed out, whatever flaws Churchill and Roosevelt may have had, they were big proponents of rallying their countries in the face of severe adversity by telling the public the truth about the seriousness of the situation. They certainly did not lie about things constantly or look for ways to hide the true nature of the problem.

In fact, in Roosevelt’s famous “fear itself” speech, which Trump referred to, Roosevelt literally also said, “This is pre-eminently the time to speak the truth, the whole truth, frankly and boldly. Nor need we shrink from honestly facing conditions in our country today.”

But while Trump has nothing in common with either Roosevelt or Churchill, he does resemble another prominent figure from the era quite a bit: Charles Lindbergh, the famed aviator who spent the months before the U.S. joined the war aggressively campaigning for America to hide its head in the sand, Trump-style, and avoid facing the real threat of fascism head on.

Wow. Just, wow.

FDR told us that the only thing we had to fear was fear itself.

Trump tells us that we should fear Syrian refugees, Central American refugees, the FBI, the American intelligence community, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Black Lives Matter, Anti-fascists and the American Mainstream Media.

FDR was anti-fascist.

Trump is pro-fascist

FDR was in favor of letting in Jewish refugees fleeing violence in Europe.

Trump is opposed to letting in Syrian and Central American refugees fleeing violence in the Middle East and Central America.

FDR was a leader who helped free innocent men, women and children from concentration camps.

Trump is a brutal sadist who gave the order for innocent men, women and children to be locked up in concentration camps.

FDR issued executive order 8802, which banned discrimination against black people at all defense plants.

Trump calls black people who protest against racism and police violence "sons of bitches" and publicly calls for them to be fired.

FDR created Social Security.

Trump is trying to defund Social Security.

Yeah, Trump is nothing like FDR. It's insane for Trump to even try to compare himself to FDR!

Trump will claim that he’s more of a Democrat than Biden next.

On the bright side he did pass the Standard Dementia Test.

(According to him.)

Trump claims that he called the COVID-19 virus a "hoax" and downplayed the seriousness of the pandemic because he was trying to avoid a panic.

Yeah, right. He's the "anti-panic president" who wants everyone to keep calm.

That story might have carried more weight if not for all the fear-mongering Trump has done over the past four years.

Like when Trump claimed that all Mexicans were rapists and drug-dealers and murderers.

Like when Trump Trump claimed that scared people with families, vulnerable, non-violent refugees fleeing violence in Central America were "dangerous caravans” of migrants, and "an invasion" of "strong men" and "tough people" who were probably all terrorists and have "violently overrun the Mexican border"

Like when Trump used the same sort of fear-mongering to paint scared, vulnerable refugees from Syria as some sort of national security threat that Trump had to keep from "invading" our country.

Like when Trump warns people not to vote for Biden because Biden will bring blacks, Latinos and "who knows" into the suburbs and bring down property values. Like when Trump claims that Biden is part of the "radical left" and that he will, "totally destroy the beautiful suburbs. Suburbia will be no longer as we know it. Like when Trump claims Biden will abolish the police and "destroy our great suburbs.”

It's FAR TOO LATE for Trump to paint himself as some sort of "anti-panic" president, attempting to keep the American People calm during a crisis.

Fear-mongering, xenophobia and white nationalism are the tools Trump used in 2016 to get racists and xenophobes to vote for him in 2016 and he's continued to use those tools to keep the support of the xenophobes and racists.

Trump isn't very bright, but he does know how to trigger the fears of racists, white nationalists, xenophobes and jingoists. That's the main tool in Trump's toolbox and he uses it over and over again.

Trump trying to avoid a panic?

HELL NO! Creating a panic is what Trump does! That's his Go-To Move!!!
