Trump isn’t lying, he’s bullshitting – and it’s far more dangerous

As Day Six of the Trump regime breaks, people are starting to react to him in a more rational manner.

If you’ve been paying attention to the news over the past week or so, you know that over the weekend America was introduced to the concept of “alternative facts.” After Trump administration Press Secretary Sean Spicer rebuked the media for accurately reporting the relatively small crowds at President Donald Trump’s inauguration, senior White House aide Kellyanne Conway told NBC’s “Meet the Press” that Spicer wasn’t lying; he was simply using “alternative facts.”

News outlets are still working through the process of figuring out what to call these mischaracterizations of reality. (“Alternative facts” seems to have been swiftly rejected.) Many outlets have upped their fact-checking game. The Washington Post, for instance, released a browser extension that fact-checks tweets by the president in near real-time.

Other outlets have resisted labeling Trump’s misstatements as lies. Earlier this year, for instance, the Wall Street Journal’s editor-in-chief Gerard Baker insisted that the Wall Street Journal wouldn’t label Trump’s false statements “lies.”

Baker argued that lying requires a “deliberate intention to mislead,” which couldn’t be proven in the case of Trump. Baker’s critics pushed back, raising valid and important points about the duty of the press to report what is true.

As important as discussions about the role of the press as fact-checkers are, in this case Baker’s critics are missing the point. Baker is right. Trump isn’t lying. He’s bullshitting. And that’s an important distinction to make.

It's so unfair that the media quotes Trump and then laughs at his lies.

Donald Trump on Friday parroted chief counselor Steve Bannon, blasting the news media as the “opposition party.”

“I think the media is the opposition party in many ways,” Trump told Christian Broadcasting Network in an interview

“I’m not talking about everybody, but a big portion of the media, the dishonesty, total deceit and deception. It makes them certainly partially the opposition party, absolutely,” the president added.

Trump said the press treat him “so unfairly it’s hard to believe that [he] won,” adding it’s “fortunate” that he now has a “big voice.”

Trump has a bullshit pulpit, not a bully one.

A secret recording obtained by the Washington Post reveals the GOP is freaking out about its Obamacare repeal. Republicans have spent the last years boasting of repealing former President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act, and with Donald Trump now in the White House, that goal seemed promising for Republicans — except they haven’t decided on a replacement.

The recording of a closed-door meeting on Thursday revealed GOP lawmakers’ concern about moving forward with a quick repeal. “We’d better be sure that we’re prepared to live with the market we’ve created [with repeal],” said California Rep. He doesn’t have a ‘secret plan to fight ISIS’: CNN’s CIA analyst calls out Trump’s lies

CNN’s intelligence analyst Philip Mudd called out President Donald Trump for his recent claims that the media is dishonest.

“Look, let’s step back here for a moment,” the former CIA agent began. “I’m not part of the media, by the way, I want to be clear on that. I’m a former CIA officer, I only appear on CNN. So, I feel impartial here.”

Mudd asked how Trump could possibly be accusing those on television of being dishonest.

“After he mentioned during the camapign, ‘We’re gonna lock her up,'” Mudd quoted Trump. “Nope. ‘We’re going to give you my tax returns after the election.’ Nope. ‘We got a secret plan.’ Nope.”

Mudd pointed out that this goes back even further when Trump called his ratings for his NBC television show “The Apprentice” a top ranked show.

“He knew when he put that information out there that it was false,” Mudd continued. “My response to the president is this: We’re dishonest? I want to know why there’s an air gap between what you say and what the truth is because it happens every day.”

“You know what the secret plan is?” Mudd said. “Breaking news: Pentagon, you got any ideas? Bring them over and maybe we will sign over to those. We have a truth deficit in the oval office and I think this interrogation issue is another example.”
