Trump’s blunder in Syria is irreparable

UNTIL NOW, it was possible to hope that the damage caused by President Trump’s terrible incompetence, ignorance and impulsivity in foreign policy was largely theoretical, and possibly reparable. That is no longer true. The cost of his latest Syria blunder is unfolding before our eyes: Innocent lives lost. U.S. servicemen and -women betrayed. Butchering dictators emboldened. Dangerous terrorists set free. A ghastly scene is playing out, and it almost surely will get worse.

How often have Mr. Trump and his Republican enablers in Congress berated President Barack Obama for allowing Syria to cross his “red line” without dire consequences? None of them is entitled ever to mention that again.

Mr. Trump — with no consideration, no warning, no consultation with allies, no regard for the other nations that have fought alongside the United States and risked their men and women in the fight — has turned tail. In the past two years, courageous U.S. troops cooperated with our Kurdish allies to defeat the deadly Islamic State caliphate. These allies lost more than 11,000 men and women killed; the United States, a dozen. It was a rare U.S. success in the Middle East.

The president has thrown it all away. His surrender is so hasty that U.S. forces could not execute a long-standing plan to take dozens of high-profile Islamic State detainees with them; we can expect to hear from those terrorists before long, in the region, in Europe or in the United States. The Islamic State is likely to exert its malign force again. The allies who fought alongside us are being slaughtered, and noncombatant women and children, too. Iran is strengthened, which threatens Israel. The murderous Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad is strengthened, too. Russia is taking charge. America’s adversaries could not have scripted a better outcome.

Is it a blunder? At its simplest it drags Turkey (NATO) and Syria (Russia and China backed) into conflict with each other. It forces NATO to decide whether to stand with an aggressor member or not. NATO can't stand with Erdogan, so what then? Is that NATO's credibility gone? Is that Turkey and its missile sites lost to NATO? It's a clever and interesting move. If Trump is working for Russian interests. If he's working for USA ones he's a cretin.

Face the facts. Trump delivered Syria into the hands of Russia, to keep their one Mediterranean seaport. Russia doesn't care about the Kurds, Christians or anyone, and by allowing Turkey to target them, gains a friend in NATO!

So Trumpski has helped the Russian Overlord, gains access to the Treasury and can skim 20% off the 6 Billion for the Wall! In his view and Win-Win.

Meanwhile Nancy and her gang of dim wits are slow rolling the Impeachment process and not developing the rage of the populace to mob the streets until the Red Don is cast out of the white house and the Rethuglican revolution is crushed!

Interesting Times!:)

"NATO exists to keep the Yanks in, the Russians out and the Krauts down" can't remember who said it.

Trump appears to have let the Russians in and pulled the Yanks out. No indication yet of how the Germans will be affected.

Turkey has a festering boil of Kurdish separatism that just got a whole sight more infected, and no-one - no-one - trusts or respects the USA.

Apart from everything else I am constantly surprised by just how much authority the US has given its president. It's like they overthrew a permanent king to have a temporary one.

Just the opposite, he put the ball in congress's court. He did what he promised to do, pull troops out of the ME. If congress want to take military action, then, let congress sign their names on the dotted line, legislate a formal plan, policy and legislate a bill to send troops back in as well as sanctions. Up till now congress has been a back seat driver in all this... Nato been absent, we spend treasure and they sit back and reap the benefits. Let the E/U and Great Britain send their assets over there and wipe out ISIS AND WE'LL SIT BACK CHEER THEM ON. The Kurds and U.S. had a temp agreement to work together to eliminate ISIS. The Kurds are caught between a rock and a hard place in part for failing to form a treaty with Turkey and Turkey should be expelled from NATO. The whole situation in Syria is a very complex and impossible situation and perhaps with no solution. No one is going to solve the issues between Sunnis, Shiites, jews, all the factions within the Ottoman Empire, the Jordanians and the aggressive actions of Iran along with the involvement by the Russians. There are animosities going back 2000 years between Christians, Jews and later with Islam. Turk''s are well versed in genocide with the Armenian Holocaust as well as Stalin's Soviet communist elimination of 20 million of it's own people. Between religious sects and ideological differences the fighting will never end. Remember when BEIRUT was the jewel if the East now reduced to perpetual civil unrest. It's the Great Crusades all over again.

Trumps retreat from Raqqa will be legendary!:)

I wonder how big an explosion from the cement plant bunker was! If they were using tube artillery, 105mm, 155mm and eight inch as well as rockets and small arms, it must have been a memorable BLAST!:)

I watched the Long Bin ammo depot blowing up from Saigon's Town House penthouse bar. A hell of a blast and more than just one! Epic!:D
