True story

Based on some comments I read under stories, I think a lot of readers presume every story is true.

How about put it in the category that the content of the story matches, and make one of the tags “true story”?

Thanks Squeeze Tight. Oh no......this is very true story. i will try to post it very soon.

As Squeeze said a lot of readers think every story they read here is true. But, 99.9999% of them are fiction, even though if you go to the main page and read the first paragraph of the site description...

I seem to recall we had a poster on AH recently whose story got rejected for claiming to be true - probably because of concern over defamation of the people in that story.

What category would a true story be posted? Thanks!

In whatever category it fits best by subject matter. It doesn't matter whether it's true or not.

But you can put "true" into the story tags, for anybody who wants to look specifically for true stories.

True Stories

I agree with the above posts:

1. All stories here are "true" stories in the eye of the reader, unless they're full of vampires and werewolves and even then readers like imaging them as true anyway. And that's fine. Whatever gets the reader off.

2. Use tags like "True Story" or include it in your title and description to capture attention to it.

3. Make sure you start the story when you post it with some kind of note at the top indicating it really happened.

And lastly, categories aren't set by "true story" because it's too broad a topic and won't fit with specific tastes and preferences. I like exhib/voy but if I scroll through "true stories" and I see anal, bondage, incest, etc, I'm going to abandon my search.

Good luck!

'The story you have just seen (read) is true. The names were changed to protect the innocent (guilty)'.

I had someone angrily criticise my story's validity due to the inclusion of a woman being stronger than a man much scrawnier than herself.

Yes, my story is almost entirely fictional, but what an odd reason to not believe it.

Is your story posted yet OP?

There are a lot of stories on lit that claim to be true... I'll just leave it at that.

Never heard of that. All of my stories (to date...and I haven't been prolific) have been true (only names changed as some have mentioned). I explicitly state that they are true in an intro. I have at least a dozen, in various states of completion that I have worked on in fits and starts, all of them true as well. (Life gets in the way and I work on other writing projects for various enterprises.)

As for most readers "assuming that most stories are true", I don't believe that. I assume every story is fiction unless specifically stated otherwise.

OTOH, many readers seem to think that the writer actually did everything that their characters do in the story, or that the characters actually were the characters in thin disguise. I remember reading on another thread that this was actually a problem with women writers, whose readers actually thought they were the sluts that their characters were. Wishful thinking, I guess.

Ain't that the truth!

I have often been tempted to put a disclaimer right up front:

NOTE: I AM NOT MY CHARACTERS. MY CHARACTERS ARE NOT ME. DON'T EVEN THINK IT.

I recently submitted a story and tried to use the "true story" tag that was previously used in one of the story subcategory's main tag list. It was not allowed. Maybe "true" would work.
