Not necessarily to tone down, some aspects can safely be even toned up.

What probably really make the difference, real life doesn't make sense, a story must. Most of what happens in a story has to have the why? question answerable as a minimum by the author themselves. Mind controlling alien invasion is as valid answer as any, but not too many things can happen just because they somehow happened, out of impossible odds.

When dumped by a girlfriend of two years right before school dance I call a random girl I think to be free and she dumps my best wimpy friend who got unusual courage to ask her out and then at midnight I sell her back to said friend while drunk, then go and fuck sister's groom's ex instead, then engage in street racing at four am and see said sold girl walking in her underwear in company of two gangsta Russians and my cousin pulls a gun on them so I can take the girl home to discover my bitch (the dog) has a litter of puppies and in the other car we raced for a passenger was her dad...

That's may or not be real life, but as a story it probably doesn't work without magic or something.
