I havven't wrote anything seriousl since 2014 and I don't know if I should write. I have written short things down since then but not been able to continue it not to sure why. I have asked for an editor on this website for a while but none seem to wanna be around or have the capability to be honest as I would liek them to be, this could be many factors and that is fine.
I would like to gt back into writing but unsure of my capabilties, wanted to vent as I am unable to on other platforms.

Writing is like learning how to dance. You can study foot placement charts until you are blue in the face, but you're never really going to learn anything until you step out on the dance floor and dare to make an ass of yourself. The worst that can happen is you will learn something and be better at it the next time.

It isn't a matter of whether you "should" write. If that is your want, then by all means write! What would be the harm? It doesn't matter whether you are good or bad at it, so long as you enjoy what you are doing. But if you do want to be good at it, you are quite wise to be seeking out an editor. Best of luck!

The number 1 step to learn to write is to write. Write a short story, publish it, and then seek feedback about it. Do the best you can. See what happens.

As Ben said: Just do it. If it doesn't come out the way that you want it to, try again. And again.

And if you can't find an editor right away, just find someone who will read what you have written and give you feedback.

Good luck.

I agree.
Just tinker away at it.
And if you ask nicely, a couple of "Bets readers" will emerge.

Hi Louise. I’ve sent you a private message with my email address. If you would send me a copy of something you’ve written I’ll hopefully be able to give you some helpful and constructive advice.

Louise,

As others have said you need to take action and start writing. The book Write a Novel in a Year has all the step by step you need. You can use this thread you opened to update how it is going and get good advice along the way

Good luck!

I would like to gt back into writing but unsure of my capabilities...

The sad thing about growing old (by which I mean we - all of us - growing old) is that we lose our daring. At a year old, we knew we wanted to walk. Falling down a lot was something we accepted, didn't worry about, didn't even consider. And now we walk everywhere.

A decade older, we wanted to ride a bicycle. We wobbled, fell down, picked ourselves up, wobbled some more - and learned to ride.

A few years on, we knew it was time to make love to another person. Again we were clumsy, unskilled, but (hopefully) enthusiastic and willing to make mistakes in order to learn.

The moral I would offer is that we need to continue to push our boundaries, to risk the less-than-perfect in order to become good. So, like everybody else has said - just write.

It doesn't have to be here, even. Remember that writing exercise in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance? A student couldn't to find anything to write about in the town, so the professor said to write about a given street. Still nothing. The prof said to write about just this one building - nope. Fine, the prof said. Pick just one brick in that building and write about it. The student suddenly began to write pages of stuff about that one brick.

Try that as as a writing exercise. Pick a very simple thing, maybe a telephone pole outside your window, maybe an old shoe. Get to work. Don't focus on grammar and spelling right now; you're trying to get your writing juices flowing. Don't go back and correct or try to improve, just keep writing. I think you'll be surprised at how much you can produce. That done, do your edits and improvements.

Once you're confident with that, then maybe it will be time to try writing fiction.

Good luck and keep us posted, ok?

Waste of time?

The OP started this thread 10 days ago telling us the difficulties she had with finding an editor/finding an editor who would be honest with her.

She is not the first and won’t be the last of those complaining they can’t find an editor although I can’t recall anyone, in my relatively short time here, complaining about a editor not being honest with them.

On the same day she began this thread I responded that I would help and asked her to send me something she’d written. At the same time I sent her a private message telling her the same thing and giving her my email. But no response.

Her posting on here and then not accepting, or responding, when help is offered is the type of thing which stops people from offering help to anyone in the future.
