Hey,

I've heard(read) more than a few references to trolls, or feeding the trolls and I'm wondering what it means?

Thanks!

Trolls are posters who post infalamtory remarks in the hope of getting someone to pay attention to them. The best thing to do with posters who never have a kind word to say or can't stay even close to the topic of a thread is to put them on ignore.

If you respond to them, you're giving them the attention they are seeking and that is known as "feeding the trolls" or in some cases "poking a stick in their cage." The latter is essentially trolling back at the trolls to get a response from them -- it's practice that just makes Trolls four times as annoying as they would be if they were just ignored.

Yeah, but it sort of feels good when you troll a troll so hard that you get put on ignore by them. ;) I've even run off some trolls before.

Trolls are people who actively trash threads and try to derail debate. They say offensive things in order to spark an argument or post random porn on a thread or type utter bollocks that has no bearing on the thread subject at all. They're usually horny minors who shouldn't be here or horny net geeks (also referred to as HNGs) who don't get out enough and who should know better.

People talk about 'feeding the trolls' because if you take the bait and argue with them, they have done what they set out to achieve, which is to cause a row and derail the original topic of a thread. Being attention whores, the best solution is to completely ignore them, hitting the ignore button if necessary.

We have runs of trolls, often when there's a full moon (I shit you not). There was a group of white supremacists a while back who posted propaganda all over the place and sent spam pms to people. I ask you, what kind of white supremacists decides the most effective way to spread the word is to spam a sex forum? They're usually just young, stupid, arrogant tweenies (late teens/early 20s) who've sprained their wanking hand.

Best way to deal with them is something that does fire damage.
Wrong!

Trolls are LOOKING for flames, that's what they feed on.

Masochist/Troll: "Beat me, hurt me, set me on fire"
Sadist/smart poster: "No."

I don't have much problem with trolls, but at last count, there were 600+ names in my ignore list -- mostly spammers, but a goodly number of trolls.

An obscure video game reference that's all. Calm down.

Jesus I can't say anything without someone getting mad at me. I remember now why I try not to post any more.

If your reference was from A.H., a troll is merely anyone who votes 1 on a story or leaves a nasty anonymous comment. Trolls don't post on boards. They hide their identity.

Is that why you don't return any of my PM's? :D;);)

My favorite trolls are the ones who post "poor me, what do I do?", and still, after 20 pages of great advice are whining "poor me, what do I do?" At which point I generally point out their trolling ways (others usually jump on the bandwagon as well ), and they go away. It becomes pretty obvious when someone is honestly asking for help and when they're just whining for attention.

You're not on my ignore list, so that doesn't explain why I don't have any PMs from you. PM that require an answer get answered. PMs that don't require an answer or acknowledgement don't get answered, but they all get deleted as soon as they're dealt with. :p

That's great, thanks guys.

Another clarification: If someone reads a story and genuinely doesn't like it, and feels the need to post why they don't like it, is this person considered a troll too?

I received this comment for my latest story, The Dare and it made me smile that I bugged someone so much that they felt the need to post on it!

don't make it.

The author throws in a few dictionary words to impress, but the story is lousy. Being raped, including anal, by security in a piss-smelling room isn't just hard to believe, its disgusting. Furthermore, everything is described in a childishly crude way, not up to par for this site.

I don't know about you guys, but I've read a lot of stories on here that have been far less than impressive, but I'm not going to write a nasty post to them, just offer constructive criticism about how they can improve.

Thanks for all the answers!

Oh yah, and I don't think that if you go by the name "gentility" that you'd particularly like a story about mall security rape so perhaps shouldn't be reading it in the first place.

That about sums up the difference between a reader and a troll. A troll will often post comments about the category (anti-incest on an incest story), or a nasty comment about their perceived flaws of the story.

Not all comments that aren't glowing praise are from trolls. I've received my share of contructive criticism.

However, there is no warranted 1 rating in my opinion. Even if the only merit of the story is that the author had the guts to try, then I think it's still worth more than a 1. But, that's just my perspective as a writer & poet.

Because one problem I do have with trolls is when I have to page past forty or fifty threads they've started to get to the first actual non-troll, non-spam, thread. Ignore blocks threads Ignored Users started and makes room on the first page for threads that might actually be worth checking out.

The other thing that gets a place on my ignore list is huge, graphics heavy signatures or signatures with obnoxious graphics -- I'm on a dial-up connection and I don't need the extra time required to download big images I don't need or want to see.

You could just put it on not showing signatures.

Yes I could, but that "punishes" those who have signatures I don't mind along with the inconsiderate jerks.

I could also turn off images so that all I see are links instead of piles of steaming shit and cutesy animated graphics that take a day and a half to download; I choose not to. I choose to block those who I find inconsiderate and/or who have only one thing to say and insist on saying it in every thread the post to without regard to the flow of conversation -- I choose not to invite those people into my home an drefuse to associate with them just as if they were behaving that way in person.

That's great, thanks guys.
