Trent Lott needs to step down

Racist or not, there is a disconnect between his brain and that cut under his nose - not exactly an admirable trait for someone at that level. If he doesn't resign his leadership position, the Dems will have a feeding frenzy. They're already wetting their pants at the prospect of having a new cause.

The Senator has as severe case of dumb-ass.

needs to go...........

you would like to think he actually understands his mistake and the impact on others...........but no...........and to think we vote people like this into office in the first place...........but then wasn't it Jefferson that thought that the general public were too uninformed to be allowed to vote?....................in many ways we get what we deserve..............

Yeah, but you know what, if we demand that everyone who ever had a brain fart resign his/her position the country would be run by overly earnest theme park managers.

n/a

Politics = People like Miles who vote, don't get what they want, and spend the next few years whingeing about it.

Assassinations are a popular alternative if you aren't happy with the way things are.

If you can't vote them out, grab Hanns toy gun and do away with yourself.

Yeah, I can't get Trent Lott out of my head either.

He's nearly as dreamy as Fabian.

Problem Is....

I'm not sure that the people in power are smart enough to run a theme park....

Remember...our commander-in-chief managed to lose his shirt( well those of his business partners) in the oil business....when most were making money

So, he makes a verbal mistake and he needs to step down?

Where was the same fervor over Robert Byrd's blatently racist comments? Granted, there was some, but not to this extent. I am not a Lott supporter but I refuse to call for his head over it. Knee jerk politics are rather silly.

I am a Lott supporter, but more importantly, the people that know him (including the members of the Senate) are his supporters.

Just a little background info:
He was born October 9, 1941, in Grenada County, Mississippi, the son of a sharecropper farmer turned shipyard worker and a school teacher. He received his Bachelor of Science in Public Administration degree in 1963 and his Juris Doctorate in 1967 from the University of Mississippi in Oxford. He is married to Patricia (Tricia) Thompson Lott, originally of Pascagoula, Mississippi. Senator and Mrs. Lott are the parents of son, Chet, and daughter, Tyler, who have blessed them with three grandchildren: Trent, Shields Elizabeth, and Lucie Sims.
Senator Lott has won the admiration of his constituents with his service to Mississippians. A June 1995 Political/Media Research Inc. poll asked the constituents of 89 sitting Senators (the 11 freshmen were not included) how they rated the job performance of their Senator. Senator Lott received a 75 percent positive rating from Mississippians, earning him the second best constituent ranking in the Senate.
He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1972 and served until 1988 when he was elected to the Senate. He was re-elected to a second term in 1994 and a third term in 2000.
The respect shown Senator Lott by his colleagues in both the House and Senate is reflected by the leadership positions to which he has been elected. In 1979, he was elected Chairman of the House Republican Research Committee, the fifth ranking Republican leadership position in the House. In 1980 he was elected Republican Whip, the second ranking Republican leadership position. The first Southerner to be elected to that position, he was re-elected to the post three times.
In the Senate, Senator Lott continued his leadership service as Secretary of the Senate Republican Conference. In 1995, he was elected Senate Majority Whip. Senator Lott is the first person to be elected to the position of Whip in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate.

I am a republican (afraid to admit that on this board LOL ) I supported Trent Lott up until the remarks he made. Yes he apologized but the excuses he keeps coming up with are way out there. And I agree if he doesnt step down the democrats will have a feeding frenzy.

I guess my real issue is that the skills required to be get elected repeatedly don't necessarily indicate the ability to be an effective leader................

Lovely stuff.

But he's a racist, right?

Or does he just think that negroes and white folk ought not to mix?

Of course, none of that is bad in the rebubbaclan party or mississippi...or at least in 75% of the place.

SOME democrats will TRY to have a feeding frenzy. But when they make the effort, they look "partisan" to the vast majority of voters.

The ONLY people who are saying that Trent Lott is racist are the people who are trying to take political advantage of the situation. Had it not been a slow news day, Trent's comments would not have even made the papers.

Please note that Sen. Thurmon is also the democratically elected representative of his state (South Carolina). In spite of his beliefs and comments more than 54 years ago, he has been elected by his home constituents repeatedly (I could look up how many times.). Trent's comments of support for Thurmon do NOT mean that Lott supports the positions of Thurmon more than half a century ago. When Thurmon ran for president in 1948, Trent Lott was 7 years-old.

Get a grip, people.

If you buy into the bullshit that Trent Lott is stupid or racist, then you're just buying into the Democratic media machine's propaganda efforts. Look at who the Dem's are that are saying Lott should step down, Gore, Jackson, Rangel, and the House of Representatives' Congressional Black Caucus (Lott is in the Senate).

The Democrats are playing the race card again. To allow them to succeed is unjust.

you could have put a comma between card and again to make it even a more true statement.

does anyone honestly think that we would be better off today if Thurmon had been elected some 30 years ago?..............

greybeard

But your missing the point. They wouldnt have a "race card" to play if it wasnt for his racist remarks. Were they not racist in your mind? Sure sounded racist to me. I absolutely hate Gore but on this I have to agree. We dont need any more damn discrimination in this world. The reason why it made headlines was because he is being appointed to a very important position. Therefore he has the eyes of America on him so naturally you make a racist remark your gonna have to eat your words.

News flash

Even Bush has now been forced to denounce Lott's remarks as "offensive," although I'm sure he hated having to do it . . .

Technically, I am still a democrat, but I describe myself more as an independent and vote based on the candidate, and not on party affiliation.

Honoring Strom Thurmond is not the problem, but his remark that the country would be better off today if he had won the election in 48 is either a huge error, or is a racist statement, as that was the party platform that Strom Thurmond ran under.

While I believe it was just sheer stupidity that motivated the remark, I expect more out of the leader of a political party. Part of the problem with American politics is that we continually lower our standards for politicians and our expectations of them.

What do you call him?

It can't just be a misunderstanding, he's made the same remarks before.

I'm well aware the Democrats are going to milk this to death, but I don't understand why a politician who makes a stupid and racist remark shouldn't be called stupid and racist.

I really don't care about his grandchildren...

Byrd wasn't in a leadership position.
