Do you give yourself a treat when you do something you set out to do, or achieve a self set goal or get the recognition at work or home?

I shop. Not very imaginative, I know!

M and me (and her two kids) just got back from stuffing ourselves with pizza to celebrate today's achievement. (wink, wink) ;)

But normally, I treat myself with something whenever something great happens. Like something tasty to eat or a new manga book or something.

Ofcourse, I also treat myself the same way when something bad happens - as consolation.

Do we see a reason for my overweight/bad economy here? :cathappy:

I used to reward myself with a book, but honesty compels me to admit I've got a terrible addiction, and I can't leave a bookstore without spending at least $50. :(

Now I try to either follow a cleaning chore with some gardening, or reward myself with a hot bath.

Yes! I cannot even walk into Barnes & Nobles without dropping $50. And I spend even more on the online store. No, no, no!

Luckily, I do live in a college town, and we have many used bookstores with huge and varied inventories.

Books are still my treat. And a nice long bath to indulge my reading time. (Small aside here - I usually have paperback versions of all my hardbacks. I've dropped far too many in the tub.)

I'm not allowed in book shops until my next student loan installment comes along. I've can spend about £15 before my bank starts getting very annoyed with me.

I've got a reward system going where each completed coursework gets me £10, every session at the gym is worth £2 and there's a scale for how many hours of good revision I get done a day (I'm losing money by being here!). The aim is to put enough money into the jar to earn myself an mp3 player. Unfortunately the Bank of Earl is discovering some liquidity problems atm, so that jar etait un peut vide. I've got an IOU sheet going now.

I still require at least an hour and a half of revision today in order to qualify for the lowest band of mp3 money, so I think I'll be off.

I don't wait for an achievement or accomplishment ... I just treat myself whenever the mood strikes! :D

I hear ya!!!

I love books too. Unfortunately, Queensland has a weird censorship thing happening across the board, so I often wait until I'm in NSW or something, or even order off Amazon. Will have to check out B & N.

There's censorship in Queensland? What kind? I've bought books there and not noticed anything prominent missing from the shelves.

I treat myself just for being alive

Hot baths with lovely smelling bath salts
Books (always)
Dark chocolate bars
Eating out
Long distance phone calls
Writing paper
Special pens
New clothes (but I have to be in the right mood)

To quote another source :D:

All publications rated unsuitable for minors by the Commonwealth Government censor are illegal to sell to adults in the State of Queensland. In other words, the only books and magazines that may be legally sold to adults in Queensland are those deemed suitable for children.

edited to add: I don't think any of the other states and territories have this, just QLD.

So you couldn't buy any Stephen King in Queensland? Or a copy of Coming Together?

That's off the map!

I never could operate with goals. They tried to teach me that stuff in a time management course and it just didn't work with me.

They said, keep them simple and doable. But then if it's doable, why even write it down. Why not just do it?

And if you surpass what you've set as your goal, is that a good thing or a bad thing? Should you quit after you achieve your daily goal and go on to something else? What if you're on a roll?

Nor do I have the willpower to say to myself, "Well, you didn't meet your daily goal, so no food/sex/chocolate for you!" I start fighting with myself and calling myself a stupid fuck, then I take what I want anyhow, because who knows when I'll get a chance again?

I need some stronger drugs, that's for sure.

I'm getting the "does not play well with others" vibe :D

Do you find that the things we treat ourselves with when we reach a goal(whether written or unwritten), is often the same thing we console ourselves with when things don't go the way we want? If you use this line of reasoning you can still console yourself with chocolate/sex/food after calling yourself a stupid fuck. ;)

It's not that strict that you can't lay your hands on a Stephen King book :D. Roughly about 1500 books a year are banned that no doubt reach the shelves in other Australian states and territories.

I reach for crap food and entertainment when I'm depressed. I'll screw my budget on Dominoes pizza, whipped cream from the can, all kinds of chocolate and sit down to mope in front of DVDs, music or books which I could not afford to buy.

But presumably you can order books online?

Achieving a goal, or winning unexpected recognition is celebration enough.

It’s when things fall apart that I take myself out for a REALLY RICH dessert and a cuppa.

Had to look around since I moved, for the proper place, and just recently found it.

It’s called “Cafe Mozart,” and it specializes in those super-rich German pastries and cream cakes.

Almost makes me look forward to my next big failure. ;)
