I just found out I have a long lost relative there and may visit... I'm from the U.S... I was going to fly to London and take the train... would it be a nice trip for someone traveling alone aside from visiting an elderly woman?? THANKS!

Have never been there myself, but I don't know there's anything especially exciting about the area. It's not too far from the New Forest (a national park).

It's near Bournemouth, that's all I know. I actually try to avoid English holiday towns as I'm an annoying snob. If you're form the US you may find it quaint.

Quaint? I'm sure the many thousands of residents of Bournemouth would delight in being called...quaint.

A group of AH-ers met up in Bournemouth earlier this year. We had a great time.

I try and avoid American holiday towns.

How did you lose the elderly woman?

Earl: I read about the New Forest in a book set during the reign of Henry I. I'm dying to know where the name came from.

"When William the Conqueror saw these acres of deer-filled heathland, pretty glades and wild wood more than 900 years ago, he couldn’t believe his luck. The New Forest was to become a royal playground, set aside for the hunting of deer, jealously guarded and preserved, for the lucky few to enjoy."

William the Conqueror named it The New Forest.

Of course not. I hope to get there one day.

I was being bitchy. Just ignore me.

I'm very defensive about my home country, and get kind of angsty whenever it is criticised. Very unfashionable, I know, but I can't help it.
