I have spent 30 minutes of hell on hold. I wouldn't mind it so much if they would lay off the easy listening. I'm sure it has its place, but did I really need to listen to a very bad instrumental version of "In My Room" by the Beach Boys? Plus a few other songs that I couldn't identify. I think there was some Kenny G, but I wouldn't know. It's like being trapped at the grocery store, in an elevator and with an uncool parent all rolled into one.

But the fun part was, I was on hold once, someone answered, listened to my problem then put me on hold again so someone else could listen to my problem. But 30 minutes of butchered instrumental easy listening. No lyrics, just the sax and piano....

I'm going to go plug myself into some U2. That will help.

Reminds me of dialing the police:

"You have dialed 911"
"this is an Automated messages"
"If you're being robbed....press 1 now"
"If you wish to speak with a police officer...please hold"

Works for me!

And as for Kenny G, well he just gives us folks with a single letter surname a bad image ...

Hey its better then Bells or Chamber music for 43 minutes!

I had no idea that deep sea divers had to put up with this too. I would have thought such musical assaults on their senses would have driven them round the bend? Must be a good reason for it after all I guess ...

43 minutes? I know I couldn't hold my breathe that long.

I swear the Phone company does it on purpose. They MAKE sure you never bother them with complaints because of the bell music. I think they figure that they wont answer the phone, keep you on hold, and torture you with bells. Of course, you get tortured all over again when you get their bill!!

Helplines...

They're all on some commission related pay scheme. It doesn't matter that they can't cope with all the complaints. The main thing is to keep you on for as long as possible and generate revenue that way. Mind you, if they were paid per call answered, they'd be in too much of a hurry to give you accurate advice.

If you can't beat 'em, perhaps you need a bigger baseball bat?
