whats the best way to do this? is it possible to use an auxiliary cable and connect it directly from a tape recorder to your sound card?

yes you can also use the microphone in on your computer and come out of the headphone out on the tape recorder....

"use the microphone in on your computer and come out of the headphone out on the tape recorder"

we tried that - the sound is shite. the tape we are using is a russian bloke ad libbing while playing the guitar - needs really good quality

"Connect your tape or record player to your sound card’s mic terminal with a 1/8” mini jack."
got it thanks a lot

You need a tape player witha "Line Out" connection, a sound card with a "Line In" connection, and a cable to mate the two.

You can use the headset output to a line in input with a direct cable connection, but you have to keep the volume fairly low to keep from over-loading the 1v peak limit on the Line-in circuit.

Using the Mic input from a head-set output is a good way to fry your sound-card. It's nearly impossible to reduce a head-set or speaker output down to the milivolt levels the Mic circuit is designed for.

Line-Out and Line-in circuits are designed to both work at the same voltage and impedance levels and exist to do what you need to do -- transfer high quality sound from one system to another.
