Top List

I read a few more Top List stories this morning. Theyre uniformly awful. How do you get away using future tense when the story is in the past? One high scorer used all the tenses, and is larded with spelling errors and passive sentences. But it seems like the winners share common traits, all are PRETTY WOMAN in some guise or other, and all pay homage to PC.

Back in 1960 John O'Hara predicted that PC would destroy fiction, like the Langoliers devour the past, up to the present.

The Langoliers ... *shiver* ... sometimes I can hear them chomping away right behind me ...

What do you have against Portnoy's Complaint?

Whew! I was worried he was talking about Providence College! I had visions of soldiers dressed like Friars running down the street shooting people.

For the topic at hand I have to say I have found that many stories I have enjoyed here have so-so ratings and although I wouldn't say the top lists suck, I have read more than my share that make me think its more a case of a rabid fanbase than a good story.

Tell me about it! When I was a kid I had a really monster cock! Gone! They ate it! They eat everything in your past. I wish I hadda picture of it.

In 1960 a PC was a priviledged character or a pregnant cow, I cant remember, the Langoliers ate my memories!

Yeah, I wasn't too enamored of the toplist stories I read. Except for mine, that is.

I didnt read yours. But I wanna autopsy some of PILOTs.

Mine are in the backwaters if they are still there.

I think many of his are largely autobiographical. He used to be plastered in red, but I think some haters went medieval on his ass.

Yeah, I could name a half dozen here in the AH alone.

And they're exceptionally good trolls apparently.

Not only do they lower his scores, but some how mysteriously are capable of lowering his vote totals and the amount of views he gets which are below that of all the "Hot" authors there.

Yeah, must be trolls. I see your:rolleyes: and raise you one.

Just like its the trolls and scouries who are the cause of all the strange contest placings.

Sorry, TX, but I've been following the numbers and patterns way too closely the last few months to believe in lits resident bogeymen anymore.

Hell, I'll be the first one to tell you that my own "W" isn't worth squat. That story was crap. Apparently I was "due"

In a lot of respects posting on Lit is a crap shoot, as long as your stuff is on the new list, you get the hits. as soon as it's off the lists, zippo!

I suppose that the Favorites add a few along the way but, for me the view's come from the New List. Votes are hens teeth.

LC, how do you know how many 'reads' another has? Where does it tell you how many votes, or reads?

I get it, but still...he used to be largely red. Something odd happened and I don't think his readers suddenly turned on him.

The one thing the all time top lists are good for is a bullseye on the story

I have noticed many times that is a story replaces number one it is immediately trolled. My feelings are that this is not the author of the story, but their "loyal" fans.

I had a few hit number 1 in Sci-Fi briefly, only to be immediately bombed. Then, of course, the story mine had supplanted was instantly returned to its original glory. My immediate assumption was that it was the fans of the deposed story. But that was back when I put more stock into things like popularity and ratings. I've grown up since then.

I'm flattered you think I'm PRETTY. Thank you kind sir. ;)

When my SWB series was running it hit the all time list several times(since it was a high chapter story the scores were high, but vote total low) Each time a chapter hit even number 2 It would get a half dozen or so one bombs to bring it down.

The only way #1 is ever supplanted is if the "new comer" has so many votes it would take a tremendous amount of trolling to bring it down and something that obvious would be swept fairly quickly.

As for growing up there is an author from a couple of years back who literally pulled his series from lit and ran off because his series was knocked out of number one through some obvious trolling and he said the site wouldn't "help him"

But karma always wins out and the new #1 barely lasted a few days before they were besieged as well.

Craziness considering this is a free site. Can you imagine the shit that would go on if people here got paid incentives for things like scores and top lists?

AH trolls

I just rolled through the main site and all I can see are random stories. The new and top lists are missing as well as the popular authors and tags.

The site has had issues for days and its really going to suck for the people entering the contest tomorrow.

I've seen a few leave in a tizzy over various relatively inconsequential happenings like that. There was one who withdrew everything because she let Scouries get under her skin, and another who said a bunch of things in various posts and got blasted for it.

Egos will be egos . . . .

I know the woman you're talking about and I believe she has her stuff(or new stuff) back here.

The site should have banned scouries after the "dead baby" thread. There's ball busting then there is just inexcusable behavior.

The site, like society these days, seems to reward bad behavior.
