Hey Dudes & dolls, what story has been in the top 20 the longest?
I noticed the lawnmower story by TawnyT is gone off the listing after checking it out today.
Also Whispersecret seems to be gone. Jane Rolly’s story has been up there for as long as I have been on this site, and might date back to her discussion on the board from spring of 99. Is that the longest?
Is it hard to get a story into the top 20 and keep it there?
How does the top 20 work?
Why is there no counter on the stories like the boards?

I believe that DCL's story Teaching Patty has been there the longest. It's been in the top 20 since I've been to this site and that was way back in Sept 99. It's up there because it's a super read. I don't know how hard it is to be in the top 20. I guess it just depends on what the readers think and how they vote. There are so many wonderful stories on this site they never make it to the top 20.

I'm pretty sure it's "Patti". I've noticed, too, this week that for the first time since it was posted "Jazzy Girl" is not on the list. Just another sign that more and more good writers are coming to Literotica.

The Top 20 is compiled from reader's votes. As far as a counter on the stories showing how many times each has been viewed, that - as well as up to the minute voting scores on all stories, a better search, and an easier navigation - is something we are working on as we speak...er, write. The new site engine should be in place in a month or so, and we should have the new site design up before the end of the year.

"Teaching Patti" has been in the Top 20 the longest - over a year now, I believe.

Good stuff adding a story counter. Just wondering how accurate the top 20 ratings are? And just out of curiosity could you publish the scores and hits for this newest batch of the top 20? It would be interesting to see how many readers each story has. Oh, thanks babe! I like it here and I like you cutie.

<smiles at THX> Thanks. I appreciate your compliments very much. I'm slightly embarrassed to admit that I check the Top Lists weekly to see if I've disappeared off of it.

I think stories have one chance to get on the list--when they're listed in the New Stories section. If they don't make it then, I doubt they will. The odds are against it:

-First, someone has to actually find your story. Just think about the sheer volume of stories a story has to compete with.

-Then they have to actually like it.

-Then they have to remember to vote, and vote highly enough to boost your "ratings."

-And you have to find ten or more people to do all of that.

I think that once you do make it on the list, it's not too difficult to stay there, regardless of your story's magnificence. My theory is that people come to the site and see Laurel's weekly message, "The Top Lists have been updated!" They go immediately to the list. They check out the stories, and if they're good, they vote accordingly. Voila! The story remains on the list.

If they don't like it, they're still not likely to vote "Garbage" because the Top Stories most likely aren't garbage or they wouldn't have made it in the first place. So it would be virtually impossible for them to fall off the list from "Garbage!" votes. The only way to disappear from the list is to be overtaken by a more popular story.

Anyway, that's my theory.

I have no idea why certain things get on the top lists and others don't. Don't get me wrong - the Top 20 stories are excellent, but there are many, many awesome stories that never make the Top 20. Once the new scripts are in place, you'll be able to see the story votes (quantity & average) for every story on the site. That'll be a better measure, though it's still not accurate.

Writing is so subjective - what's crap to you may be gold to me. That's why I not a big believer in popularity contests. We have the voting & scores available, but I don't think any author should take the scores to heart. I think you'll get a much better sense of whether your story works by asking for specific feedback in the "Story Feedback" section.

WS - don't be embarrassed. I know you're not the only author to check those lists. And you're still hanging in there!

Whispersecret--I read your story in the Top 20, and I loved every word of it. It was enticing, and I just couldn't scroll slow enough. Made me wish I hadn't taken that speed reading course a few years back. I had to go back and read it a few times before I was sated. Thanks for the chance to see it here.

((Incidentally,if this is not already possible, and I just don't see it, would it be a good idea to link the BB with the authors' stories--sort of the way the profile icon links a BB reader to an individuals' posts? They might get more air time that way.))
