too much of a political statement????????????

I got the sarcasm PC. But you know as well as I do, that so many people have demonstrated that exact thing over the past few months.

Think Sparky. Damn.

You're comparing me to Sparky? That's fucked up.

Let me expand on #2 up there. My example is using Hockey, which is a team sport so it's not ideal but it's on my mind. Joe Thornton will not be competing at the Olympics in Hockey. There willl be something like 350 hockey players there but not Thornton who is probably better than all but a dozen or so of them. Why? Well cause he plays for Canada where we've got too many good players. So the Olympics doesn't have the best 350 hockey players in the world but 8 good teams and some idiots who get to play because they're countries decide it might be a lark to have a hockey team.

I'll go with #2, because you bring up a good argument. Except that the Olympics aren't, and never have been, about individual athletic prowess. They've always been about national identity. the very first Olympic games wasn't necessarily a gathering of the best athletes in the world. It was a gathering of the best athletes in Athens versus the best ones in Sparta.

In fact, the Marathon itself was run to commemorate a battle - fought during a *gasp* war!

There's always going to be national pride in the Olympics, because that's what the Games are all about. If you want something else, there are dozens of international competitions that don't involve national affiliation. I think the Olympics are special because of the national pride that's redolent throughout the Games. They ought to stay that way.

Comparing this to Vietnam just pushed all your credibility over the cliff.

Again, sorry MM. Didn't mean this as a comparison between Viet Nam and now. Just using the term "conflict" for two such different events in history is disturbing to me. If fighting back after a direct attack cannot be considered a war, I guess I'm just confused at all the terminolgy we are handed throughout the years.

Of course this all gets away from the original intent of this thread, but I'm glad to have been a part of it (thread that is!).:)

Thanks for responding and raising my interest in something I obviously don't quite understand!:rose: (Maybe I'd better stick to the "fluffy stuff" instead of the "meaty issues".)

Hmm. Can we at least eliminate all of the crappy things they give medals for?

Here's my list

Anything on Ice that isn't speed skating or Hockey
Anything divided into weight classes except the heaviest weight class
Anything obscure
Anything judged

Yeah..I think we could thin down the list quite a bit, for both the Winter and Summer Games.

I do like the Wrestling, though...and the Ice Skating (except for the compulsories, but I can see where they're necessary).

It is a conflict, it isn't a war. Period, end of sentence. To say this is a war would really fuck up everything the Bush administration has done to make sure we didn't follow the "rules of war." I'd like to refer you to the posts about how to treat "detainees."

Let's see some consistency in the more conservative viewpoint. When it serves our purpose it's not a war, but when we want something it sure as hell is.

ARGH!

Actually, it's more like Truman's "police action " that is still going on in Korea.

No, I'm realizing that you were being sarcastic.

I know you said it tongue in cheek. But that's because I have seen your political views for almost a year now.

However, there are people on this board, like Sparky, who genuinely believe what you said in a sarcastic manner. And that is frightening.

I can't control which morons and dimwits read this board. If they think Big Foam Fuck You hands are a good idea, no skin off my ass. Those same folks probably think The Rock would make a good President and the Klan are just a bunch of nice folks who are really proud of being white but don't really mean nobody no harm anyways.

Nothing I say is gonna make them start listening to NPR and join go PETA, know what I mean?

Does that mean that you Canuks would have to get by with curling?

No, you see that's my list of things to be eliminated.

I'm sorry I quoted your post to make my point. That was bad of me. I wasn't necessarily criticizing you, your post was just the closest and the most radical.

Now, I will leave this thread with my hot head and deal with third person labia licking. PC you are welcome to join. I'm sure your tongue would be welcome.

No need to apologize, although just being mentioned in the same sentence with the Philosopher of Poop is a little irritating.

I dunno about the third person thing. Makes my right arm hurt and gives me a sudden urge to gobble viagra.

What's with this "Fuck you" attitude, though? I'm not saying that those responsible for the terrorist attacks should get off scot-free, I just don't think that responding to hostility with hostility is appropriate or necessary. I know it's instinctual for many people, but we just have to realize that some instincts are just BAD IDEAS.

I disagree.

Let me guess, you are one of the people who think we should have turned the other cheek and not sent troops to go after the terrorists?

And your original post talked about the flag being carried in as portraying the "fuck you" attitude. Bringing in the flag is a bit different than foam "fuck you" fingers, IMHO.

I agree with everything you've posted Cheyenne....:D

This is not my type of thread to join in... especially not so late in the game. I am not a political person really. I know how I feel about issues and really no politician on either side of the fence would sway me. I am patriotic, have always been. Growing up witn a WWII veteran kinda does that to a person. I am not bothered at all by all the flags... there should have been a lot of flags before. I don't think there is anything wrong with being proud of where you are from and being pissed off when something horribly tragic happens.

anyhow..that's my little chunk of change.....

Eh, I don't really care about the whole "which sports should be omitted from the Olympics" thread, so I'll just ignore that...

Problem Child, you stay true to your ID... But your sarcasm is detected and appreciated, lol. It's good for me to get my head out of my ass for long enough to realize how damn serious I sound sometimes. Thanks. But I do agree with Lavendar that your sentiments (sarcastic or not) are the exact things I'm protesting against. There are people out there, believe it or not, who DO have that attitude, and I just think it's a dangerous one to have. If we're not careful, our actions could very well instigate more attacks.

As for the "war"/conflict/whatever we're in: Cheyenne, no I don't think we should have just turned our other cheek and not gone after the perpetrators of the attacks. We suffered quite a blow at their hands in many ways, and I think they should be captured and punished. How to punish them if/when they are captured is a different question entirely...

Besides, how is the statement made by Olympic athletes bringing the American flag to ground zero not the same as saying "Fuck you" to the terrorists out there? What other message would having the best athletes in the world defiantly carry the symbol of America to the site of the country's greatest tragedy (that may be debatable, but I don't care to go into that here) send to those who wreaked such havoc? Do tell...

Exactly what message would you send to the terrorists that planned, fianaced, and carried out these attacks?

"Come out, come out, wherever you are?"

"Please be nice?"

"You're grounded?"

"Now you have to go to bed without supper?"

Or as the Fireman siad at The Concert for New York,"Islama bin Lauden, you can kiss my royal Irish ass!"

I think I'm just not getting my point across... Maybe I'm too pacifist or something, but I just don't think most of you understand what I'm trying to say. That's fine -- it's been interesting posting on this board, but I think I'll just leave it alone now. Have fun.

This so typical of the liberal mind set. If you don't agree, either there was a failure to communicate, or the conservitive was just too dim witted to understand. You are very articulate, with good retorical skills. You made good points and forced many of us to look hard at things that we (or I at least) have been taking as a given. I will miss your contributions.

I watched the flag be carried in just a little while ago and thought it was done very nicely. The choir singing the national anthym was beautiful. Too political? I don't think so. Same as fuck you fingers? Nope, not that either.

Time to go watch the parade of athletes!
