Europe - Thy Name Is Cowardice

A GERMAN EDITORIAL
If any of you still feel that this war on terror is a mistake, here is an opinion from an unexpected source. It's fascinating that this should come out of Europe. Mathias Dapfner, Chief Executive of the huge German publisher Axel Springer AG, has written a blistering attack in DIE WELT, Germany's largest daily paper, against the timid reaction of Europe in the face of the Islamic threat. This is a must-read by all Americans. History may well certify its correctness.

EUROPE - THY NAME IS COWARDICE
(Commentary by Mathias Dapfner CEO, Axel Springer, AG)
A few days ago Henry Broder wrote in Welt am Sonntag, "Europe - your family name is appeasement." It's a phrase you can't get out of your head because it's so terribly true.

Appeasement cost millions of Jews and non-Jews their lives, as England and France, allies at the time, negotiated and hesitated too long before they noticed that Hitler had to be fought, not bound to toothless agreements. Appeasement legitimized and stabilized Communism in the Soviet Union, then East Germany, then all the rest of Eastern Europe, where for decades, inhuman suppressive, murderous governments were glorified as the ideologically correct alternative to all other possibilities.

Appeasement crippled Europe when genocide ran rampant in Kosovo, and even though we had absolute proof of ongoing mass-murder, we Europeans debated and debated and debated, and were still debating when finally the Americans had to come from halfway around the world, into Europe yet again, and do our work for us.

Rather than protecting democracy in the Middle East, European Appeasement, camouflaged behind the fuzzy word "equidistance," now countenances suicide bombings in Israel by fundamentalist Palestinians.

Appeasement generates a mentality that allows Europe to ignore nearly 500,000 victims of Saddam's torture and murder machinery and, motivated by the self-righteousness of the peace movement, has the gall to issue bad grades to George Bush... Even as it is uncovered that the loudest critics of the American action in Iraq made illicit billions, no, TENS of billions, in the corrupt U.N. Oil-for-Food program.

And now we are faced with a particularly grotesque form of appeasement.

How is Germany reacting to the escalating violence by Islamic Fundamentalists in Holland and elsewhere? By suggesting that we really should have a "Muslim Holiday" in Germany?
I wish I were joking, but I am not. A substantial fraction of our (German) Government, and if the polls are to be believed, the German people, actually believe that creating an Official State "Muslim Holiday" will somehow spare us from the wrath of the fanatical Islamists. One cannot help but recall Britain's Neville Chamberlain waving the laughable treaty signed by Adolph Hitler and declaring European "Peace in our time".

What else has to happen before the European public and its political leadership get it? There is a sort of crusade underway, an especially perfidious crusade consisting of systematic attacks by fanatic Muslims, focused on civilians, directed against our free, open Western societies, and intent upon Western Civilization's utter destruction. It is a conflict that will most likely last longer than any of the great military conflicts of the last century - a conflict conducted by an enemy that cannot be tamed by "tolerance" and "accommodation" but is actually spurred on by such gestures, which have proven to be, and will always be taken by the Islamists for signs of weakness. Only two recent American Presidents had the courage needed for Anti-appeasement: Reagan and Bush.

His American critics may quibble over the details, but we Europeans know the truth. We saw it first hand: Ronald Reagan ended the Cold War, freeing half of the German people from nearly 50 years of terror and virtual slavery.

And Bush, supported only by the Social Democrat Blair, acting on moral conviction, recognized the danger in the Islamic War against Democracy.

His place in history will have to be evaluated after a number of years have passed.

In the meantime, Europe sits back with charismatic self-confidence in the multicultural corner, instead of defending liberal society's values and being an attractive center of power on the same playing field as the true great powers, America and China.

On the contrary - we Europeans present ourselves, in contrast to those "arrogant Americans", as the World Champions of "tolerance", which even (Germany's Interior Minister) Otto Schily justifiably criticizes. Why? Because we're so moral? I fear it's more because we're so materialistic, so devoid of a moral compass.

For his policies, Bush risks the fall of the dollar, huge amounts of additional national debt, and a massive and persistent burden on the American economy - because unlike almost all of Europe, Bush realizes what is at stake - literally everything.

While we criticize the "capitalistic robber barons" of America because they seem too sure of their priorities, we timidly defend our Social Welfare systems. Stay out of it! It could get expensive! We'd rather discuss reducing our 35-hour workweek or our dental coverage, or our 4 weeks of paid vacation...

Or listen to TV pastors preach about the need to "reach out to terrorists. To understand and forgive".

These days, Europe reminds me of an old woman who, with shaking hands, frantically hides her last pieces of jewelry when she notices a robber breaking into a neighbor's house.

Appeasement?

Europe, thy name is Cowardice.

Europe - your name is cowardice the comment of Mathias Doepfner "Europe - your surname is Appeasement!", Henryk M. Broder in the "world wrote on Sunday" some days ago. A sentence, which does not go to one any longer by heart, because it is so terriblly correct.

Appeasement cost millions Jews and Nichtjuden the life, because the allied ones in England and France hesitated to negotiated for a long time and, until they noticed that one does not merge Hitler, but to only fight can. Appeasement stabilized Soviet communism and the GDR, as parts of Europe clarified the inhumanen suppression state to the ideological alternative. Appeasement laehmte Europe, when in the Kosovo the genocide raged and one is enough in such a way debated, until the Americans settled our tasks there. European Appeasement, camouflaged in the nebula word "Aequidistanz", relates the suicide assassination attempts of fundamentalist Palestinians in Israel, instead of protecting the only democracy in the middle east. Appeasement coins/shapes the mentality, if Europe in the Iraq over those 300,000 by Saddam murdered and tortured victims away-seen and in peace-moved self-righteousness George Bush bad notes gives. And Appeasement in its most grotesque form is it finally also, if one reacts elsewhere to the escalating force of Islamic fundamentalists in Holland and with the suggestion to introduce to Germany a Muslim holiday nevertheless. Which must still happen, until the European public and the political guidance personnel realize: It prevails a kind crusade, a particularly perfide on civilians concentrated, against our free, open, western societies arranged system attack of fanatisierter Muslims. A conflict, which will presumably longer last than the large military arguments of the last hundred years. Led of an opponent, who by tolerance and obligingness be bezaehmen does not let itself, but such gestures, misunderstood as indications of the weakness, only stimuli.

Two American presidents of the recent past had the courage to decided anti- Appeasement: Reagan and Bush. Reagan terminated the cold war, Bush recognized - Tony Blair supports only from the social-democratic conviction politician - the danger of the Islamic fight against the democracy. Its historical role will have to be evaluated in some years. Europe makes itself it meanwhile cosy in the multi-cultural corner, instead of defending with charismatischem self-confident its the values of the liberals society and act in the area of conflict of the real weltmaechte - America and China - as attractive force center. We against it form us as world champions of the tolerance opposite the intolerant ones, how also petrol criticizes Schily rightfully. Why actually? Because we are so moral? To fear is rather: because we are so materialistic.

Bush risks for its politics a devaluation dollar, a too high indebtedness of the State of, a substantial and lasting load of the American national economy - because it concerns the whole. But while the allegedly so materialistic robbery animal capitalists in America know their priorities, we protect the Pfruende of our fearfully defended social prosperity. Do not interfere only, which could become expensive. There we rather discuss the 35-Stunden-Woche, requirements for dental care supplying and listen to television ministers, who hand the hand to the "murderers" want. Sometimes in these days Europe reminds of an aging aunt, who puts its zittrigen hands around their last jewels, while a robber straight breaks in with the neighbours. You talking about that 3rd rate "power" with obsolete soviet planes and diesel submarines??? Hell, they cant even get up the nuts to challenge the Tiawanese.

Why should China waste money on upgrading its military ?

It's got the US to secure its oil supply for it, and while the US bleeds to death doing so the Chinese are hastening your eclipse through economic means.

Why, it's almost as if their leaders are smarter than yours.

Missing soldiers’ IDs found in Iraq

Top general says U.S. controls 40 percent of Baghdad

BAGHDAD — American paratroopers found the ID cards of two missing soldiers at an al-Qaida safe house 75 miles north of where the men were snatched in an ambush last month, the military said on Saturday. The soldiers found computers, video equipment and weapons but no sign of the missing men.

>Cut<
Paratroopers made the surprise discovery of the missing soldiers’ identification cards June 9 near Samara. The safe house — more than 100 miles from the area where the men disappeared — was otherwise empty, the military statement said. American soldiers approaching the building came under fire from a nearby stand of trees, and two were wounded before air support could arrive.

Spc. Alex R. Jimenez and Pvt. Byron Fouty were snatched in a raid on their 10th Mountain Division unit on May 12 near Youssifiyah. The body of a third soldier taken in the raid, Pfc. Joseph Anzack Jr., was found floating in the Euphrates River. Four U.S. soldiers and an Iraqi translator were killed in the May 12 ambush.

British press heralds entry into fighting
©Associated Press
April 18, 2002
LONDON -- As British troops secured a deserted cave complex in Afghanistan on Wednesday, the press back home was flushed with pride -- as the newspapers saw it, the U.S. military wasn't up to the challenge and had been forced to call in the Brits to finish the task.

In the words of the ever-patriotic tabloid Sun, U.S. troops "did their best but the job needs finishing."

"It's tough at the top as U.S. calls on our boys," said a headline in the Daily Express.

Britain may consider itself America's most loyal ally, but many Britons doubt that Americans are much good when it comes to the nasty reality of ground combat, no matter how many Hollywood epics they turn out. The critics also failed to mention World War II and the U.S.-led D-day landings at the start of the Allied invasion of Europe.

The Sun's military adviser, Maj. Gen. Ken Perkins, wrote Wednesday, "The al-Qaida terrorists still lurking in their mountain caves have not yet come up against troops used to mountain warfare."

The U.S. 10th Mountain Division, which has been heavily involved in fighting in Afghanistan, "are mountain troops in name only," he said.

London's Evening Standard recounted with delight a reported comment from a soldier of the 10th Mountain Division -- which, despite its name, is based in nonmountainous Fort Drum, N.Y. -- to a journalist: "We don't do mountains."

LMAO, I suppose their paratroopers are afraid of flying.

No comment really, since most of their military are ripped to the tits on 'uppers' most of the time.

To be fair, if you had Bush for a CinC, you'd get hammered all the time too.

35 killed in Kabul suicide bomb attack

KABUL, Afghanistan — The deadliest insurgent attack since the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 destroyed a bus full of police instructors at Kabul's busiest transportation hub on Sunday, killing 35 people and wounding 52, officials said.

The enormous suicide blast, which raised the specter of an increase in Iraq-style bombings with heavy casualties, was at least the fourth attack against a bus carrying Afghan police or army soldiers in Kabul in the last year. The blast sheared off the bus' metal sidings and roof, leaving a charred frame.

"Never in my life have I heard such a sound," said Ali Jawad, a 48-year-old who was selling phone cards nearby. "A big fireball followed. I saw blood and a decapitated man thrown out of the bus."
