With the mysterious lack of female babies, China would be well advised to do just the opposite.
Nobody in the PRC refers to anyone as "comrade." That is totally Soviet. There are plenty of women around, except for the nongminggong 农民工. Hate to say it, but they are just slaves anyway.
The aversion to homosexuality in totalitarian countries is puzzling. I can understand why it would have been discouraged behind the Iron Curtain, since many of those countries experienced population drops and they wanted people to produce more offspring to feed the Soviet machine. But why China? They have severe overpopulation issues, to the point that they put a limit on children. If anything, they should encourage homosexuality.
what about the homosexuals?
tongzhi 同志 will be used by young people on social media such as weibo to refer to gays, LGBT or any other sexual minority in China. The same is true in Taiwan. However, in conversation the western terms "gay" or "LGBT" have really gained traction and are more frequently used. I guess this is understandable as it's easier to speak English than write it for most Chinese. Well, the same holds true for westerners trying to come to grips with Mandarin and simplified/traditional character styles.
