Tolerance Between Alternative Lifestyles

I have been noticing a startling trend between alternative lifestyles. There seems to be a certain amount of hate between the groups that just baffles me. Kinksters judging other kinksters, homosexuals bashing lifestylers, fetishists bad mouthing leathers and any other combination of descent you can imagine. I really dont understand this mentality and it upsets me when I become a victim of such prejudice. We have enough hate in this world from "normal" people to turn on others within alternative lifestyles. Can someone help me understand why with all we have to endure, why must we endure hate from our brothers and sisters in freedom of lifestyle choice?

well i am not sure where I fit in....I am a kinkster - one of the things I like to do is strap on sex.

I am bi, so I guess I am a alternative lifestyler,

A bunch of fetishes.

But I am not a hater

Your point seems superficially plausible.

On second thought though; why must I approve of everyone that bucks the mainstream??

I'd have to be pro-PETA, pro-Islamic jihad, pro-gay marriage and all kinds of other things I'm against.

I resist your pat division of the world into "normals" and "others".

I never said you have to go toting a rainbow flag or sign a petition for religious views you if disagree, but I do NOT see why everyone cant allow everyone else live how they choose without prejudice.

I think it's a whole lot of "I might be fucked up, but I'm not as fucked up as you are." I've said this several times, I know, but I still don't think that "most normal of the freaks" is really anything to write home about. Doesn't matter, sweetheart, you're still a freak.

Screw that, I want to write home about winning the annual freakiest of the freaks award. I'd keep it on my night stand and possibly make sweet gentle love with it three times a week.

I've come to look at it this way. The ability to hate without reason or rationality is as much a human characteristic as say, compassion or love. It's not necessarily a bad one that should be cut out. It may not be out prettiest trait or one we should be proud of but to cut it out is to lessens our humanity. It's often that trait which inspires people to band together and form our own societies. Though, I do believe that people should limit that distaste for others. While we have a right to express it to others I think some people take it too far as to actively hurt other groups simply because of their identity.

I guess to me, being tolerant doesn't mean to not dislike some group but to not actively force my beliefs upon their ability to live their lifestyle as they wish. Being kinky hardly makes us any more enlightened than say a deep southern American bible thumping conservative... hell some of them may be more accepting than we are. I also am inherently distrustful of someone who says they don't discriminate based on culture. I've never met a single person who didn't have SOME sort of prejudice or hatred.... though I have met some who didn't act on that prejudice.

Bunny, you often make me smile with you blunt and blatant perogative. Thanks for your input. :)

Poppet....everytime you call yourself that it jives my monkey since we have a painslut in our fold whom I nicknamed poppet.

Yes, I couldnt agree with you more. It is within our nature to be intolerant to a degree. However to make life hard and sometimes unbearable on others because of that intolerance is unacceptable.

Hate gays if it helps you sleep better at night. Distrust all others unlike you if it makes you feel safer, but to cause the well being of others to be deminished (esp those you claim to love) simply because you either cant or wont try understand them or their choices is sad.

Let's not confuse hate and intolerance. Some people are just annoying. Bums asking for money are annoying, and I don't tolerate their lifestyle, but I don't hate them.

I think BiBunny probably has it right - as long as there's someone more effed up than you are, you can justify your own personal kink. Maybe that's why child molesters are at the bottom of the pecking order.

You know SweetGigi, I've asked this question on other boards before and the answer I have gotten is that some people just aren't happy unless they are causing drama and discontent. And you know what I tend to believe this to be true for the most part.

I have come to realize that I just don't care what everyone else thinks of me and my lifestyle choices anymore, as long as I am happy and Daddy is happy that's all that really matters to me. If others don't like what I'm doing then fuck em... I'm not asking them to participate anyway. :)

:( Sorry hun, moon gave it to me a while ago after realizing how much she loves pushing her control and playing mind games with me (not to mention she has one hell of a love with dressing me up femme since I'm a tad tomboyish). I actually am really excited, we're supposed to do a scene this new years where we'll medical staple my arms, legs, and neck then run lace from them to a cross made of wood. Something about being a human marionette.... *purrs*:cathappy:

Couldn't agree more. Most people spend way too much energy, thought and time into seeking the approval of people who have nothing to do with their life, don't even know them. I live my life the best way I can, that changes as the years pass to adjust to my growth and present circumstances, and if someone has the time to feel they need to show their disapproval, good luck to them as it probably means they really have nothing better to do. While they are focusing on me, they are leaving someone else alone I guess. As someone said to me recently, most people are basically selfish and self centered...they don't want to take the time to put themselves in another's shoes, nor do they always have to. Life goes on.

It really has less to do with seeking their approval and more with them demanding tolerance of there rights/views and then refusing to extend the same courtesy to others.

double standards are the pits.

Sure, but you don't kick them in the head or spit in their face for it.

The intolerance becomes hateful once it intentionally begins to affect another persons choices and rights to make that choice.

Your opinion should end where my nose begins.

The reason is because people who practice an "alternative lifestyle" are no different than so-called "normal" people. We're all still human inside, and we're all still going to be opinionated and bitchy.

I consider myself to be quite normal and I get offended when people tell me I'm not based on one aspect of my life. Yes, I am a sexual submissive. I'm also a 20 year old psychology student. I'm also a daughter and a sister. I'm a feminist (yes, I'm a feminist slave-girl). I enjoy writing and photography and would love to do either or both professionally. I think styling my hair and applying my makeup and choosing my outfit for the day is one of the funnest parts of my day. Just like any other twenty year old girl.

There is more to me than the freak I am in the bedroom.

There's no law or unspoken rule that just because you have sex that's more than vanilla-missionary-lights off that you have to tolerate or even respect a "lifestyle" (I personally hate that term, because as I've mentioned there is more to my life than just my sexual persona, but the term is a workable generality) that you don't agree with. I try not to pass judgment on others (just because I have a sort of "don't knock it until you try it" view point on most things), but that doesn't mean that other people, "normal" or not are going to feel the same way.

My local group actually prides itself on bringing the various subgroups in kink together. Sometimes it's challenging, but it's also nice. That said, there are a lot of groups under this umbrella, and I'm not surprised everyone doesn't always get along.

Islamic jihad and gay marriage. Yep, that is pretty much what you should be crusading against.

There are only two things I can't stand in this world: People who are intolerant of other peoples' cultures, and the dutch.

Ha. I do love that quote.

I PM'd you for cyber... no response..

Hmmm, I never PM'ed him!

I disapprove of rosco's disapproval of gay marriage. And round and round we go.
