Let's don't forget the historical context here:

The ACLU was founded in 1920, according to their website. Unles this person lived to be extraordinarily old, this was said/written when the Cold War hadn't started. Communism hadn't taken hold in the Eastern Bloc or China. America hadn't yet become afraid of the "red menace", and socialism was seen as a perfectly reasonable political alternative, particularly for those who were actively shut out of the then-current political system.

Michael Denning's The Cultural Front has interesting historical context on U.S. Socialism in the 20's and 30's.
