I know it's a bit of a pretentious item to "drop names" regarding real life in a thread. And yep, it could be damaging to ones anonymity too. But in some cases as in this case - "considering the source," by name and face, aids in what makes the story so interesting, or in this case funny.
I'm not too worried about the other thing.
So, with that caveat……………
As you may have read via earlier Sparkman notes of the day - my "suits" are in town in a big way - the top of the top, big time, "sitting on the board" - type of suits. Fortunately I only have to deal with them directly a few times a year. Thank God!
When they all do get together, it's a big fucking deal and this time is not/was not an exception - hence, Dan Rather's presence yesterday. Today was more of the same - only even more so.
Today, I had a TV show - (that's going nowhere but "to tape" but that's yet another, "suits only" type of perk - I mean, story) - it was a panel - with the likes of Robin McNeal, Lou Baccardi, Mike Gartner and Tim Russert. Heavy-duty dudes - all of'em, "my suits" (among quite a few others present here today) - to say the least. My uber-bosses.
They discussed the huge fuck-up of reporting GWB the election winner, too early, and then reneging on it soon thereafter. And of course it's effect on other voters going to the polls in the more western states and all the ramifications for - next time. A lot of it was very funny, but two items stand out that I thought you all may be interested in.
One was via the first questioner from the audience, made up entirely of "other suits" - and from none other that former Prime Minister Brian Mulrooney too. He noted that just last week, Canada had counted 19,000 votes - in 4 hours - all by hand. Wow! How? A "national ballot's how." He also took some joking flak regarding "Canada not exactly being a huge bastion of Free Speech" - and that of course, the US is - but it was all in fun.
Russert took flak regarding his "little dry erase board" that he, you may remember, used the night of the election to tally totals as they were reported in from individual states. He told of being phoned, nearly immediately, by the Smithsonian and other such notable collection house's as to obtaining that little board "for their collection." He held out though - primarily because his son had nostalgically requested to have it, a gift from dad, he thought - the joke turned out to be on Tim "the dad" - when his son enthusiastically said, "Just think what I can get for it on Ebay!"
Anyway - all proved a success and Sparky maintains his job yet another day, probably a year, probably longer. It can feel good.
I just wish I didn't have to work at all. Hey, maybe if Russert gave me that little board - I could retire on the damn thing.
Oh well.
