Sorry been gone awhile and will be gone awhile longer. Just read your message and couldn't email you.
Read your Go story and would like to offer a few observations.
Generaly The better player plays white.
I'll give anyone a corner if he lets me have the middle. and one does not play just one piece of the board a Dan ranked player will be playing all 4 courners and the middle at the same time. The moves are about the same and the better player will have the same advantage in each corner.
You mentioned placing a stone at the 4-4 point to invite attack. While this will invite attack eventually a good player will build his house before assaulting yours.
Joseki is not just a word for skirmish tactics but the best tactics. To play joseki you make the best possable moves. These moves are standard enough to be in book form and called joseki.
And lastly walls are slow. It takes two safe and connected "eyes" to establish and keep territory. A wall is just a piece of ground that takes you more stones to surround.
I will add that the story read very well...very very well and I thought that the point of view was intended to be confused about points or ettiquette and playing. Looks like a very good mentoring situation. I enjoyed it.
Sorry again I didn't reply sooner been gone a year and likely will be again.
