You are, I am sure, aware that in Canada we have been metric for decades. With all those meters stacked like cordwood (or just lying about), the quality of Canadian poetry should have improved.

Studies have shown this not to be the case.

When writing Canadian Haiku, how many syllables is "eh"?

Pome rhymes with home and gnome (without the silent g).

Unless the Queen drops by for tea then it's Poe-em.

Oooh so verrry regal my dearest.

What a charming porcelain throne you have. Been shopping at Harrod's?

Ah but that pome rhymes with palm or psalm. (Mind those P's an' Q's) or in French with bum (which about sums up much of my poetry)
Is that what the phrase "apple-cheeked" makes you think of?

What I wanna know is how you guys pronounce "poem."

It's not pronouced "Poe-eh-m" in Canada?

(of course in SoCal we pronouce poem "yaknowlikethatrhymeypoemthingylike")

Nobody I know says "poe-em". Most people pronounce it "poe- uhm" with a schwa.

I like saying schwa.

I knew a woman whose favorite exclamation was "what the schwa?"

in defense of ə

A vowel—lowly, upside down,
Contributing, uh, some renown

To language. It’s "Uh," heaven sent,
Though inverted. It shall repent

Its slack and simple sounding swoon
Or not. Like, get with e a room!

This "front" and "central" relationship stuff is just disgusting to Real Americans. We Real & True Americans support close back vowels, as they show up on the right in that (well, suspect) International Phonetic Association diagram.

the link didn't work for me. Don't know why.

*sad face, or something*

It didn't work for me, either.

I suspect a Northern Conspiracy to monopolize unstressed and toneless neutral vowels. I mean, they're all socialists up there, aren't they, uh?

Oh. That didn't sound right. Perhaps I have that wrong, eh? :)

I suspect it doesn't work for anyone. That's why I found it funny.

It's all in what's not said. I think.

I'm sorry. I'm like BJ. I could't see the link, despite some significant time spent fucking around with the URL.

Is it some double secret dog dare thing for you Canadians?

Should I start hoarding Loonies?

I mean, those coin-like ones? (Fine. Label me paranoid, but I fear armies of well-trained and talented soldiers who know how "ou" trumps "o" to swarm over our least defended northern outposts, taking down Starbucks signs and replacing them with Tim Horton's.)

Not that that Tim thing would be a problem. Your coffee is better than our Starbucks equivalent. You've got good doughnuts, too.

Just a comment.

darkmaas apologizes

Sorry folks. The link worked quite nicely two days ago. The IT sleuths at Duh'mass Technologies Inc. have worked tirelessly through the night to figure out the problem.

No, the site did not crash because of the high volume of traffic engendered by this thread.

No, it is not a dooughnuut plot.

No, (for those with a yen for conspiracy theories) it is not the fault of the Department of Homeland Security and no Mountie or his horse was tasered during the investigation of this URL crisis.

It seems that there was a disagreement about the owbership of the URL and it was taken down yesterday. You can see the original page if you google "What's the shwa" and click on the "cached" button, but I must warn you that the lame humour is not tough enough to survive the wait. You would be better off to write a limmerick or something.

If we get approval from the Moderators, we will start a new thread specially for complaints titled "To keep the 'To keep the "Meter, Rhythm, & Cadence" thread clean' thread clean".

Note the clever use of what was once known as a nested DO LOOP to those of you ancient enough to care.

Please return to your regularly scheduled perversions.
