To continue or not continue... that would be the question

I know that many of the authors that hang around in the AH have numerous stories and poems posted. I am hoping that many have come to the same fork in the road that I facing.

I have several stories posted... some of them are done where they stand others... well I am not so sure about them.

I don't know whether or not I should continue them or stop them where they are... should they be left on that ledge or almost tumbling over or should I come in and let the characters help me finish their stories....

What do you do with stories that 'could' be more... do you leave them there or do you come in and help them finish?

I usually let them simmer a LONG time ... stirring occasionally ... before deciding whether or not to serve 'em up.

If the characters still have something to say, then eventually I let them say it. If not, it's probably done.

Yep, what he said.

I have a few of the 70 or so stories posted... that tug at my head... the muses are like um could you finish it now please...

but I don't know what to do with them

I think that my writing has changed enough that I may not do them justice the way that the story originally started... and I feel badly for changing them up in mid stream if that makes sense

I would suggest that you do what I do. I gather the existing parts of the story and write the entire thing into a novel. I then submit the novel for paid publication. My first novel is published and I have just submitted my second try.

I am having some of my stories taken down now because of something I submitted to a publisher....

I think I need better editors or something though... I stink at it

Well, my opinion...for what it's worth

Well, my opinion as a writer is I would sooner leave the audience with wanting more, rather than beating a dead horse.

Yes. Exactly.

None of my stories was ever meant to be continued.

But sometimes an idea just comes to you, you know?

Oh, I don't know.

I wouldn't mind seeing the next phase of your The Hypothesis.

Yum.

Merci beaucoup, sweetie.

I'll give it some thought. See what I can come up with.

You might write a sequel, using some of the same characters. Usually, when I finish a story and expect it to be part of a series, I make it pretty clear at the end that there will be more. Sometimes I get feedback asking for more about the same characters, and there is no more to say or write about.
