In almost all of the threads about cartoon characters it has been brought forward that sixties Hanna Barbera toon characters from series like "Josie and the Pussycats", "The Archies" and of course "Skooby-Doo" featured stunningly good looking girls with nice physiques with all the fat in the right places. Even so called plain girls like Velma from Skoobie Doo had a nice figure and was well endowed in the breast size department. And most of those girls apparently were teenagers.

Now in current shows about teenage girls like "Kim Possible", "The life and times of Juniper Lee" and "Braceface" the girls themselves are drawn really skinny. Even a series like "Daria" is no exception as most of the girls who appear in the series are skinny not having the womanly shape yet or are in the process of developing.

So let's go with that and look at the teenage girls in more recent toons who continue this tradtion of being poetry in motion and a feast for the eye.

I'll start this thread with Jodie Landon from "Daria"

Let's be honest, Jodie was miles ahead of any other of the teen girls in "Daria" what looks and physical devellopment was concerned. Jodie was the only girl who did not have the skinny pencil-like limbs of characters like Daria, Jane, Quinn and Brittany. And while Brittany had a bigger bust, Jodie's bust was more in proportion with the rest of her body. Furthermore Jodie's posture also was way more feminine from the others, the way she sits in this picture is a perfect example of that. If any of the female characters of Daria had real physical beauty, it would be Jodie.

Then there's Temari from Naruto

Temari is a bit of a contradiction, she's tomboyish, brash, loudmouthed, violent and conniving. And yet at 15 years old she also has the kind of body which would make any boy have an instant hard-on. "Naruto" is a series with plenty of notable female characters but of all the junior ninja girls Temari is without a doubt the most "Woman" of them all.

Azumanga daioh has two girls that just have to be mentioned.
First is Koyomi "Yomi" Mizuhara

She has classic feminine beauty being the most womanly of the cast save for...

Sakaki

My guess is that Sakaki has gone through a growth spurt because she actually is emberrased by her fully develloped body, tall size (she's almost 6 feet tall) and incredible bust. She's shy and soft spoken and rather revels in really girly things like collecting stuffed animals. She's the most adult of the girls of the series and yet really wanted to stay a cute little girl, in her opinion her height and fully develloped body took away any chance of being cute.

You can't talk about depictions of females in cartoons with mentioning Jessica. :p

On a more serious note, the depiction of females has as much to do with the series creators' artistic styles than with any deep philophical Truth. It's not even especially culturally influenced although non-american origins do usually mean a bit less prudery.

Different times.

Modern western cartoons like "Daria" or comics like the by now classic "Ghost World" are intentionally a backlash against the pinup-ification of the old time cartoon girl. They come from an indie background, and are portraying teen life, sexuality and culture in an entirely different way than the old Archie and Scooby style, that was a cliché orgy if there ever was any. This includes the physique of the characters. They don't try to appeal to the pimply-faced teenage boy, (who has internet anyway and access to way better stuff in terms of titillation) but to the wannabe intellectual teenage girl.

Modern Eastern cartoons. Well, it's a way different cookie.
