What are the laws about investigating a suicide? Can the family request a copy of the initial investigation report? Can someone other than the wife of the deceased, like parents, get a copy of the autopsy report or is that not public? Is there such a law about coercing someone into suicide or provoking it?

I have 2 dear friends whose son recently killed himself and they asked me these questions. I had no answers for them. If any one can help, lawyer or not, I would be so grateful. They live here in the eastern part of the country and their son was in California. They are unsure of what to do to get the whole story behind his death.

A big thank you to anyone who can help!

I am so sorry to hear this..... There is a company called Martindale-Hubbell Inc. and they not only publish a law directory but they publish a book of all the laws.... The Directory publishes lawyers only....and you can find it in most major cities libraries.....it is very helpful so try there... Each state has different laws .... I wish you luck and I only hope I was of some help....

My condolences to your friends and :rose: :rose: for you....:)

Thank you WG,

I will check those links out. This has been such a hard time for them. I am still feeling numb about it, almost like it didn't happen. I'm sure once the funeral is over and done it will hit me.

Charmed 1 as his parents they should be able to get any information that they request from the police and the coroner's office that looked into the suicide, as long as

the case is closed and has been officially ruled a suicide.

They should also be able to talk with the officers that investigated the suicide.

The problems are:
A. He was married and 20 yrs old so his wife is the one they are talking to and she isn't sharing the info.
B. This happened on this past Saturday so they are still investigating. The coroner did say that prior to autopsy she could only say that he died from a gunshot wound to the head. It entered thru his mouth so they assuming suicide. The police will not tell them anything either.
They are not getting much information from anyone and what little his wife told them sounds kinda hinky. The story just isn't coming together.

Charmed1.........in most states the next of kin is the one and only the one who can recieve the information...and the coroner can take awhile with the results......it is possible that they could petition the court for the findings.....I have a friend that is a coroner.......but I know how tight lipped they can be....sorry this isnt more positive......but the best thing might be let things cool down alittle and then its easier to talk about this sort of thing....I am sure from my funeral experience..that feelings are running high right now........I will keep you and your friends in my prayers also his extended family!......

Thank you WCM.
They are thinking of waiting until the services are over and hiring a lawyer to get the information they want. They are really struggling with this and trying to find some answers somewhere. If only his wife would let them in on what is going on.....
I want to help them through this but, really don't know how.

Well......may I suggest a book you could get for them.......Its "Awakening from Grief: Finding the way back to Joy" by John Welshons.......great great book........

http://www.openheartseminars.com/html/bio.html

here is some info about John and how to get his book

I only had one suicide while I was at the funeral home I worked at.......but I know the parents were destroyed.....its not an easy thing to deal with......your helping them just by being there for them and keeping them in your prayers.......

I truly hope this help!.....

Thanks for the link. I'll check out that book as well. It is still fresh pain for them and I know it will take time.

While you, and his parents are waiting for answers, there may be some other things you might want to do.

Many communities have support groups for survivors of suicides. This might be something you might want to look into. Also go to yahoo.com and do a search under "suicide", you can find some excellent online support for survivors of suicide as well.

Also, police and all that aside, if he was involved in any sort of mental health care, his parents might want to talk to his psychologist/psychiatrist. They might have some idea (or even his family doctor, if he'd seen one recently) and might be more receptive to speaking to someone than the "by-the-book" police.

I wish you all the best during this difficult time.

Thank you. He was involved with a mental health professional and we are thinking about the fact that about a week before he died, they put him on new meds. Not sure what they were, though. I'll pass this on to his family to ask about his doctors and try to talk to them.
