Tips on getting an editor?

There's a very large list of volunteer editors. I joined this site with the intent to post my story and get beta readers. Then I saw there were volunteer editors so I could make sure it was more polished than simple Grammarly use could provide.

One small problem: You can't submit your story to them without getting an answering email. I've been submitting to as many editors as the site will allow every couple of days, without a single email response. I've made sure I've filtered so that I'm only sending to editors who listed my story's genre as one they are willing to edit. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong? Or is this a common problem?

So, how, exactly, does one get an editor here?

I have had the same problem, been knocked back by Lit. on a story a couple of times for errors. Tried to contact editors, but as you say not a lot of response.

An editor did contact me offering her services which I accepts so just waiting to see her corrections to my story.

Basically all the advice I can offer is see if there are any authors who submit stories similar to your and see if the style of writing is much difference to yours.

You can make a thread here in the EF asking for someone to help. List what you need from them, add the word count, and the genre. Then see if you get replies.

Good luck.

This seems to be a common problem. Your best bet is to actually post a thread here to request an editor. Describe the story's themes or categories, any controversial scenes (some editors don't want to edit non-consent, for instance), and the length of the piece. Give it a few days, but you should get a couple of responses.

I edited a few stories here in the spring, when I was finishing up a copyediting certificate and was eager to test my skills. Now I've moved on to starting my business, but it was (mostly) a great experience. I hope you find someone soon. There are a lot of amateur editors here, but there are a few with either actual credentials or great self-taught skills.

I found a great one, who had to stop because of a chronic health condition. After that the ones I found were about useless.

I then started using Hemingway Editor and Grammarly and stopped trying to find an editor.

Think this is the best, quickest approach.

Making your own post here is a great option, but also the first post in the editors forum, up in the blue section, has people willing to edit.

As others have said. Post you request here, look at the sticky post above to see who may be available.

The editor program doesn’t work properly, mainly because there is no means of knowing who are active. A lot add a profile there with good intention but when they decide it’s not for them, or no longer want to edit, they don’t de activate or remove that profile.

Also I think that when you apply a search, it shows them in order of last entered or updated. The only time I get any requests from there is in the week following on from when I update it. It also relies on a currently active email so if the editor doesn’t monitor the email, and most use a lit specific email, then they don’t pick up the request.

It's really important to let an editor know what you are hoping to achieve from the encounter- when someone approaches you saying they need a beta reader only and the first sentence is something like 'I am sitting in the grass looked back at her bum swaying as she walks toward me in the moonlight saying "Hi sexy one"!!!!!'

Be honest with an editor- say you haven't written anything since middle school and English is not your first language and you need someone to check punctuation etc. I can see from your writing above that I doubt this will apply to you, but having an idea and being willing to listen and sometimes ask for clarification from an editor and their comments is good. It can be hard to receive criticism at times too, so you need to be open for the opinion of others.

Sometimes posting a thread here can help too- 'I've written a Non-Con story focussing on a boss forcing his employees wife to sleep with him for her hubby to keep his job and am looking for beta readers and anyone who might find typos and the like...'

Thank you!

I'll just open up a thread here requesting help, as per multiple suggestions. Thank you all so much for responding to me. At least now I know it isn't necessarily something I'm doing incorrectly.

I submitted my story on 2020/09/09 and I haven't got any response yet. Is this normal? Should I wait longer?

Make sure you actually have submitted it, that it's not still sitting in Draft. Ten days is a long time, yes.

Submitting a story to the site is not what's being talked about in this thread, though - these folk are on about finding a volunteer editor to go over their work before it's submitted. Two different things.

This. The VE program at https://www.literotica.com/editors/ has many names, most are inactive. To use the VE program with any chance of success, only contact VEs that have updated their profile in the last few days. Otherwise, this forum is the best place. With the VE program I send out 10 for 2 replies and 1 successful 'edit'.
