After a quick online check, I just realized I've been getting the lyrics wrong to "Rule Britannia!" for decades.

I always assumed polio, too, as it was both degenerative and crippling.

The story doesn't go into the treatment that kept him alive, but I'm pretty sure it had something to do with ukulele music and tulips.
