Times have changed....a word on Masterbation

This week while visiting my mother, we dug thru some junk she'd pulled out of my grandmother's house. There we found a book published in 1947 called "Digest of Hygiene The Science of Keeping Clean, Well, and Happy for Women and Girls." Inside were some basic illustrations of "how a man works" and "how a woman works." It was very interesting to flip thru it and read how times have changed. However, one chapter in particular had me rolling on the floor in hysterical laughter. What follows are a few excerpts from the chapter on masturbation. Thank God I'm a 21st Century woman!!

"Masturbation was long thought to be most injurous in its effect, often resulting insanity, but the medical world now recognizes it as a very bad habit in the young and one that should be prevented or at least curbed when it has started."

"The best cure for masturbation is prevention"

In adults...."immoderate indulgence is apt to lead to complete nervous exhaustion with sparks or flashes before the eyes, or a dry inflammation of the eyes, or it may lead to serious functional sexual disturbances. Lack of energy, shyness, absent-mindedness, and an inability to work may also result. The habitual masturbator is almost always a melancholy person." (Shyness?????? and what's that with the eyes???)

during puberty masturbation is frowned upon...."for great harm can come from it, for the continual practice may so weaken the nerves that later in life normal coition cannot give satisfaction."

In attempting to keep children from masturbating, tell them..."while millions of people masturbate, millions also indulge in the use of alcohol, but that any habit that weakens the body is a vice and should be stopped."

And my favorite comment....."should a person be unable to break the habit, consult a physician, who will prescribe medical treatment, which in almost every case will bring results."
(I can't help but wonder what kind of medical treatment they are talking about!!)

My how times have changed!!

Hallelujah!

Hi there
I was laughing my ass off at your post. I say thank God that times have changed. How did people ever survive? I, for one, support Fantasia....and masturbation.
Funny thread!! :)

it's a bad habit that's very, very good....

thank god times have changed....otherwise I'd be arrested
for how much i masturbate! :D

seriously, those in the medical community didn't know
much back then about sexuality.....remember the Kinsey
study done back in the '50s.....that opened a lot of
eyes......

plus those old myths about masturbation are a bunch
of "old wives tales" anyway!

Just when you think times have changed, talk to your local school board about the sex education policy in your school district. Some very large groups of people still adamantly resist any type of sex education in public schools, and while they demand that health classes teach abstinence as the only prevention for pregnancy or STD's they oppose any discussion of masturbation. We at Lit should not kid ourselves to think that even a majority of the population is open about discussing sex. We still have a long way to go.

I hear that.....

I still think that health classes in at least high school should
talk about more than just abstinence.....there are many
options out there for birth control......I'm all for the school
nurse's office giving out free condoms......hey, as long as
kids are protecting themselves, that's what matters...more
importantly, kids should know the *right facts* and just not
stuff picked up from other friends and the movies....

Well said Princess. As I health educator I have had my mouth shut tight by the new (thank you Brother Bush) abstinence message. The schools in our area all jumped on the grant dollars offered by the administration to push the Don't do it message. So the folks who were doing STD/HIV prevention interventions and education have been given proverbial gag orders. We are no longer asked to come to schools and do education. Another problem in my state is that the community planning group on the state level that are supposed to be repesenting the different at risk groups are filled with well meaning but very religious people who are pushing their abstainence agenda and clueless about what is happening in real life. It is some scary stuff. Bush has set us back decades.

If we are set back decades in terms of sex ed, that is not
a good thing for the kids of today!

In 1994, Jocelyn Elders lost her job as Surgeon General after mentioning that masturbation should be included in sex education. Yup, times have changed.

I say we nominate Ginny for Surgeon General - then we'll see some serious changes.

I remember that very well....first woman Surgeon General,
and she gets canned for mentioning masturbation should
be "included in sex ed".....hell, why not? masturbation
discussion can be embarassing for kids to discuss but
its important for them to know that its okay to do it,
as long as its done in private.......

Masturbation--yesssssssssssssssss

When I was a kid they used to tell us that masturbation would result in blindness...I decided real early I would only do it until I needed glasses.....

In seventh grade biology they seperated the boys and girls for sex-ed, and a doctor was the boys' guest speaker. Of course someone had to ask the masturbation question - would it hurt you? The reply was "It won't hurt you, but it's just not the thing to do."

God I am glad I didn't have that crap in my life.

Both of my parents allowed me guilt free masturbation. I just got pissed off when Mom confiscated my porno mags and then I found my father reading them! hehehehe

True! True!

I especially laughed at this quote:

during puberty masturbation is frowned upon...."for great harm can come from it, for the continual practice may so weaken the nerves that later in life normal coition cannot give satisfaction."

I think the person who wrote that line didn't know what normal would be today...

I translate it as:

"If a person finds out what real satisfaction is like through masturbation, they will be surely be very disappointed with what many of their partners think passes as satisfaction. "

I don't even think masturbation was mentioned in any
health class of mine until at least high school.....maybe
not even then....and I'm only a Gen-Xer! I do remember
when I was in 5th grade we had a unit titled "family life"
and there were two instances where the boys and
girls were separated........i remember from 6th grade
onward, health classes (regardless of topics, even sex)
were coed. Times have certainly changed. I remember
reading about masturbation thru books that my mom
had bought for me in regards to growing up, etc. etc.

A good true story.....Mom takes away porn mags, and
yet, your dad reads 'em! Sheesh!

Yes, I was considering that phrase of riffs about his dad's reading habits. When did anyone ever "read" a porn mag? Fucking pretentious.

I did know one guy who did a doctorate on porn mags - I was always pissed off that he got there first.

Now he could say he read pron mags.

Oh boy....a doctorate on porn mags?!
I'd like to read that!

Oh he looked at them too. And I am certain he jerked off.

I come from a long line of wankers. Last summer before he died, my 95 year old grandpappy told me that he still masturbated at least once a week.

I asked him what it felt like to be so old. He told me, it still works, just takes longer.

I asked him what kind of things did he dream about? He told me he dreamed about hunting and fishing and his late wife, Lula:

"I am in bed and Lula throws her leg over me and I say 'Lula! Just remember we got sweet potatoes in the oven!'"

I love old wankers. Well, at least I loved my grandfather! :)
