Okay, I believe that time travel would be exceptionally dangerous to the world as we know it... My logic being that even if do some thing so inconsiquential as eating something in the past that simple action could mean that someone important (directly or indirectly) could be denied a meal that could have potentially ment the diference between him having a stroke of genious and had the idea for the first car... Or light bulb... Or pc... Who knows! It doesn't even have to be the actual inventor it could be some poor shmo that the guy met in a bar and chatted with and got the idea from! Heheh!

And not only could you denigh the world as a whole some grand invention you could set into motion some of the worst tragedies known to man! Say your in the same resturant or what ever, after having eaten your meal and as you go to pay for the food you grab a tooth pick from the little tooth pick machine... It being the last one there... Never knowing that a man at the end of his rope is standing behind you, and the only thing that will deswade him from saying fuck the world and running out with a semi auto rifle is that tooth pick YOU just took! (This man had plaque and just had to clean his teeth because they were all nasty feeling and he had had enough!)

...What do you all think?

I have always loved the idea of time travel, but it would open up a whole new set of what ifs. If you were to go back & stop Hitler from being born, would someone worse come to take his place. If it were possible for me to go back to 9/15/99 & prevent a man from going into a church with a gun, I'd do it. It may be totally selfish, but I would do anything to prevent the shooting that took my son. One of my favorite books is "Time & Again" about a man who does go back & ultimately decides to stay in the past.

I loved "Time and Again" -- very romantic. Interesting book. Not great, but involving.

Ravenloft, I think the scenarios you present happen every day, don't they? If physicists are right everything that can happen does happen, but in another reality. Therefore at some point in the past you did take the toothpick, but you also didn't, and both realities are existing in different dimensions. So even if you could go back in time (and you can't) it woldn't matter what you did, because, in some reality, every permutation of existance is being played out anyway.

I've always been fascinated by time travel, too. My first screenplay was a time travel piece. It was 180 pages long and of course no one produced it, but I loved writing it.

I'd love to take a network news film crew back in time about, oh, 2000 years. Jerusalem. Around Passover. "This is DCL, at Calvary, for CNN..."

"I HATE temporal mechanics!!!" (Qoute Chief Miles O'Brien, Star Trek Deep Space Nine)

Time travel is full of a lot "if's", and even though it's an very interesting subject, I'm happy that it isn't possible, because you never know what will happen if you are able to go back in time, and change just a tiny thing.

I have it on good authority (the voices in my head never lie to me) that the phenomenon known as Deja Vu is actually a result of time travelers tampering with the past. Every time you experience Deja Vu it's because time travelers have changed history and you are experiencing someting that in the untampered timeline has already happened to you.

Since the tampering has changed history, you have to experience whatever it is again at a different point in your life, but you sometimes remember the previous history as well.

(If anybody buys this, I've got some beach front property just north of Las Vegas I'd like to sell.)

I believe either of two things:

1) A change in the past would split our timeline into two fictions (i.e., alternate realities), and in such a case we wouldn't notice a damn thing;

2) You can't change the past, because what you will do has already happened, and you therefore change nothing (one and only timeline/fiction);

3) Time travel is impossible, other than for informational reasons, because of paradox (i.e., you go back in time to kill Hitler, but then you find there's no point to go back in time because Hitler's dead, which means he doesn't die, and...ug...see #1);

4) I believe that I can't count;

5) There is neither past nor future except as abstract ideas; there's only present, which renders the entire discussion pointless.

The whole discussion produces a headache, no matter which way you look at it. Go talk to Lazarus Long (a.k.a. Woodrow Wilson Smith, a.k.a. the Senior, et al.).

So what does any of this have to do with sex? It would be interesting if I could travel back in time to 1940 and get into bed with Dorothy Lamour, but that's about it.

If nothing else refers to sex, Canucklehead922 referenced a fictional character of Robert A. Heinlein's who's adventures (sexual and otherwise) can be found in _Time Enough For Love_, _The Number Of The Beast_ and _To Sail Beyond The Sunset_.

Lazarus Long is a character with a rather high libido, and his clone sisters are even hornier and less inhibited than he is.

Time fixes itself?

What do you think of the theroy that time fixes itself?

For example, you go back in time to do something like...get a toothpick :) Then, you were supposed to be there so that the person behind you would go psycho. However, because he killed a boy's father, this boy goes on to be a famous politician lobbying for better care of the mentally unstable...Which is why you got the treatment you needed and are on this mission.

Looking back at my post it sounds a bit silly, but it's late :) Give me a break, ok?

Teresa...

Oh my gawd...

Is this the shooting that was in the paper?...

My brother, my Best Friend was stabbed to death in 88, and the killer got 8 years, out in 5...

Good morning Shiraz, If you live in Texas, the shooting that killed my son & 6 others was reported all over last year & I have done several interviews for local media.The story is a mentally ill man walked into a church in my neighborhood with a gun. Within 15 minutes, 4 teens, 3 adults & the shooter were dead. He committed suicide in the back of the sanctuary.A reporter that I have made friends with told me that it was the #1 story in Texas in 1999. I don't know how much publicity it got outside of Texas, after the first few days, but "Real TV" did an episode that featured my son & one of the crime shows on A & E did a story on what happened, although they focused on the man who committed the crimes. Several national magazines have done stories & my mom & my sister were shown in Newsweek.
