Time to stop allowing anonymous feedbacks?

I have written several stories for Lit and find that the people hiding behind the 'anonymous' label usually provide negative and scathing comments to the authors. Seems they have no courage to put their names on their words. But they are the first to critize someone else's words.

Why does Lit continue to allow the use of anonymous feedbacks?

If you are willing to provide feedback, you should be willing to take responsibility for what the content of that feedback is.

I was castigated by Mr. Anonymous for plagerizing from one of Lit's greatest writers, Just Plain Bob. I sent JBP an email asking his opinion of if I infringed on his work and he replied that I had not.

I wanted to send JBP's reply directly to the person accusing me of stealing JPB's words and thoughts, but I could not because I had no idea who that person was.

Mr or Mrs Anonymous feedbacks allows people to berate the writer, pulbic accuse the author of such things as stealing other works, and blasting the author for story content in very raw words many times.

It is time to do away with anonymous feedbacks or allow the authors to optionally select they will not accept anonymous feedbacks.

This would certainly help us authors in moderating the comments.

Thanks

It's pretty much an option already.

If you don't want anonymous feedback, all you have to do is disable public comments, and choose the option in your profile that does not allow anonymous feedback to be sent to you through email, either.

Easy.

Or, as I understand the system, you can just delete the public comments that you don't like, or at least the ones that are based on incorrect information and/or assumptions about your work. Or you can post your own comment, can't you? Frankly, I think that the diversity of opinion that you get from keeping your comment box completely open far outweighs the damage and/or hurt that can arise from an anonymous poster.

Oops!

I just found the button that allows me to turn off anonymous feedback.

Sorry to trouble you folks.

Purlease!!

We struggle, on the fringe, to fight for free speech and you come here advocating censorship and disallowing free comment. Shame on you.

Everyone here has an alt - even you 'Dr_Know', so to attack others that don't reveal themselves is a tad hypocritical.

A lot of Anon comments are pretty positive. If you choose to turn off feedback I think you are going against everything this site and its members stands for.

But heck,it's a free world, do what you want. When every writer follows your line we will just end up with an anodyne set of public feedback that says, 'u rite reel good' - is that what you want?

If you put yourself out there, you must have a thick enough skin to take the brickbats.

I think you write well, but if you disable public comment I will just pass you by and read someone who wants feedback.

I agree.

When you put your work out there for the general public to read, you have to expect that not everyone is going to like what you write.

Grow a thick skin - or stop writing.

I don't either. Still not sure what the point would be.

Technically I do (I used it to submit a troll baiting story-I did a bad job because people liked it), but I never use it in threads. Do you elfin, come on, tell us who it is...does it begin with an S? ... :)

I wondered something similar when I noticed some AH regulars didn't have stories. You probably know this, but one alt is a social creature while they publish under a different alt - pros and cons to that, I think.

I don't have one. Why would I?

some folks are just too lazy to register

sometimes readers are just being mean nasty assholes... but sometimes they are just too lazy to register

If the anonymous reader makes a decent post even if its "wrong " or misses the point of the story it should NOT be a big deal

Imho

I haven't yet posted a story here, at the moment the greatest possible effort is being made by a wonderful person to edit it into something I can submit. I understand Vixen4770 is currently using a whip to beat it into submission readiness. :)

However, I have posted on other boards, and can tell you that negative comments exist. The question is how do you react to them? Mostly I ignore those who call into question my family tree, especially if it sprouts branches. Purely insulting comments, ignored. Constructive criticism is helpful, because it shows me shortcomings which I may not be aware of, or hadn't considered. I know my grammer is bad, and I don't mind comments along those lines. It's better than it was, but there is always room for improvement.

In the end, it depends if you take the comments which are obviously intended only to hurt you seriously. A thick skin is required in the online world. I know it's annoying at times, however I'm not sure I want to be the one to decide who is able to say what. I don't know anyone whom I would entrust that power to.

Exactly.

I agree that comments spouting insulting nonsense are useless, however, I've been here a long time, and I've seen way too many people get upset with harsh but true critique. They love the positive comments, even those from "anonymous," and even if they say something as useless as "i luv ur storie! I came 2 times!"

It's a little hypocritical to complain about anonymous critique when it's unflattering, but eat it up when it isn't.

And your comment about devoloping a thick skin is right on, too. Anyone who lets themselves get all worked up about something like "u suck as a writter" (misspelling intended) needs to give up on writing. Not every reader is going to like what you've written, and sometimes, especially when you're first starting out, a harsh critique is deserved.

Embrace the trolls. In time they will make you laugh. Go here and enjoy.
Anoymous

Yes, but how many writers stop writing because of it? I at first was so put off, I just don't need that avenue for negativity in my life.

My advice to anyone, is to delete all anonymous stuff as soon as possible, don't keep it, don't look at it too much.

I would not turn it off though. In these days of the surveillance society, some of your readers will be much too afraid to sign, and feedback is the food of the writer.

Also, if you write just like JPB, know that his category invites much negative response, so you are not alone...

Hope you feel better,

Maharat
