I don't care much for political threads, but I wanted to post this and get the GB's feelings on the issue:

33 Senators Voted Against English as America 's Official Language June 6, 2007.
On Wed, 6 Jun 2007 23:35:23 -0500, 'Colonel Harry Riley USA ret' wrote:

Senators,
Your vote against an amendment to the Immigration Bill , 1348, to make English America 's official language is astounding. On D-Day no less when we honor those that sacrificed in order to secure the bedrock character and principles of America . I can only surmise your vote reflects a loyalty to illegal aliens.
I don't much care where you come from, what your religion is, whether you're black, white or some other color, male or female, democrat, republican or independent, but I do care when you're a United States Senator, representing citizens of America and vote against English as the official language of the United States

Your vote reflects betrayal, political surrender, violates your pledge of allegiance, dishonors historical principle, rejects patriotism, borders on traitorous action and, in my opinion makes you unfit to serve as a United States Senator...impeachme nt, recall, or other appropriate
action is warranted.

Worse, four of you voting against English as America 's official
language are presidential candidates: Senator Biden, Senator Clinton, Senator Dodd, and Senator Obama. Four Senators vying to lead America but won't or don't have the courage to cast a vote in favor of English as America's official language when 91% of American citizens want English officially designated as our language.

This is the second time in the last several months this list of Senators have disgraced themselves as political hacks.....unworthy as Senators and certainly unqualified to serve as President of the United States.

If America is as angry as I am, you will realize a backlash so stunning it will literally rock you out of your panties...and preferably totally out of the United States Senate.

The entire immigration bill is a farce...your action only confirms this really isn't about America , it's about self-serving politics.... despicable at best. 'Never argue with an idiot; they'll drag you down to their level!

The following senators voted against making English the official language of America :

Akaka (D-HI)
Bayh (D-IN)
Biden (D-DE)
Bingaman (D-NM)
Boxer (D-CA)
Cantwell (D-WA)
Clinton (D-NY)
Dayton (D-MN)
Dodd (D-CT)
Domenici (R-NM)
Durbin (D-IL)
Feingold (D-WI)
Feinstein (D-CA)
Harkin (D-IA)
Inouye (D-HI)
Jeffords (I-VT)
Kennedy (D-MA)
Kerry (D-MA)
Kohl (D-WI)
Lautenberg (D-NJ)
Leahy (D-VT)
Levin (D-MI)

Menendez (D-NJ)
Mikulski (D-MD)

No suprise...These traitors are looking for 20 million more votes next presidential election...

Make sure you don't move into the French-speaking part of Canada.

I've received a few "begging letters" from a political group that's lobbying to get the US Congress to pass a bill making English the official language. While I agree English should be the official language, I resent the idea that I should pay someone to get our elected officials to do something as obvious as this.

The governor of NC is pushing to make it legal for illegal immigrants to attend community colleges in the state. His thought is that their money is as good as a legal citizen's, and it will make the illegals able to get better paying jobs. Huh?

You don't even want to know how fucked up our language policies are.

it's amazing how often i agree with republicans but find their reasoning, if one could call it that, nuts at best, repulsive at worst.

what

other language are they proposing instead ? There are not that many dutch people in the US ?!

Apparently it needs to be done.

What kind of socialist, pinko, big-government, interfering, fascist kind of government would actually legislate what language its people are allowed to speak?

Sounds like those damn democrats are interfering in our business again just like always.

Well, first we have no Senator Dayton in MN anymore, we have Klobuchar and Coleman, so there's some issue with the list.

Second, and more to the point, if we're going to have an official language shouldn't it be something based on the natives? Say, Iroquois? Granted, a lot of immigrants and some of the colonists spoke English, but isn't it sort of arrogant to assume everybody should?

How is that working out? I can envision the US being officially bilingual as well. (English/Spanish).

I dunno, Québec has been part of the British Commonwealth (formerly Empire) since 1753; Canada has been a separate country since 1867. The Queen still has her picture on the money, so I guess it's pretty much okay.

Except that the size of the Canadian bureaucracy began to grow at an unbelievable pace around the exact same moment that we adopted a second Official Language.

jesus christ!!
declaring english or ANY lanuage as the official language of a country, in no way mandates the inhabitants are required to speak only that language.

in fact, it doesn't require they speak it at all. it would be a step (unnecessarry and symbolic) towards mandating those seeking resident alien status have a working knowledge of that language.

Yet they speak French in Quebec ... A bit odd eh?

Only in certain provinces.

Some are "bilingual" only on paper. New Brunswick is the only province to be officially bilingual.

Alberta is perfect. We're english speaking and the rest can fuck off. :D lol But damn Ottawa makes us recognize the French on our product packaging.

You want a federal government job in Alberta?

You better speak French. Even though nobody there speaks it. That's a simple fact across the country.
