Thunder and Lightning and Tornadoes, Oh My.

Weather in Kansas is a bit erratic at present.

Thunderstorm Warnings, Flash Flood Warnings and Tornado Watches (a Warning earlier - that tornado caused little damage and has since dissipated).

Add to that Hail, High Winds, and Dangerous Lightning.

And what, do you suppose, is my husband doing at this very moment?

He's on our front porch, mini-camming the lightning show for his science classes. The lightning is incredible, yes, and he's protected by an overhang, yes, and we have large trees all around that would probably take the lightning bolt instead of him, yes, but . . .

I just hope he doesn't get fried this fine evening.

Boom!

Don't like it? Wait 10 minutes.

Still north of us. You can keep it, baby....

Ah, you're no fun!

The lightning show is pretty wild, you must admit. It's been a long time since we've seen that much activity.

Despite the thunder our children are already snuggled happily in bed. They feel safe from the storm, you see, as long as they have their little flashlights. And of course us Kansans are well-prepared for this type of craziness.

It does appear now that the bulk of the storm has split and is going south. We won't see much except the rain.

Good.

In another forum, a man was working outside when a lightning bolt struck very near where he was. He too was protected by an overhang. He said that he woke up the next morning feeling like he had gone a couple of rounds with Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis [no external ear damage]. He says that he has trouble concentrating, ears ringing and sleeping at night since the near miss. Be very careful with lightning. It is dangerous stuff even if it does not directly hit.

You're probably getting what we had earlier today. What fun.

I've never seen Kansas, but i was driving through Indiana when a thunderhead marched through, a mile and a half tall, looking like the fist of God and scattering electrical bolts all about, and within as well, so that its head was illuminated fitfully. It was raining very efficiently upon those below (DeKalb). It never attained a piece of ground upon which I was driving, although I did ultimately drive through some wet places where it once had reigned.

We've got a storm heading in our direction right now. Why is it that they always happen at night so you can't see if a tornado is coming at you?? I hate living here.

Nope. Just checked in.

Having a fair night so far?

I got to walk through the city in the night time with my daughter and some friends of hers. Back home now, listening to blues and Paul Desmond on the sax.

Looks the storm is wrapping around us. Sarah, this is your fault.... :p

Fair enough I guess. Looks like it's about to get downright nasty though if that storm comes any further south.

I have seen Kansas, many years ago.

In fact, just about exactly 35 years ago -- Early July 1970 -- I was driving along I70 at night through severe thunderstorm just after crossing the border from Colorado to Kansas when I experienced a bright flash and immediate thunderclap.

The passenger in the front said, "damn! That was close!"

I looked in the rear-view mirror and saw the back-seat passenger's waist-length hair spread out and illuminated by the headlights behind me like she had grabbed a van der graaf generator at full power and said, "Close hell! That hit us!"

Other than that, I wasn't all that impressed with Kansas. :p

I think we dodged the bullet of the first set of storms. However, the ones that were in Kansas are heading in this direction. Hopefully they will either fizzle out or go further south by the time they get here.

Laughing -

Well, I'm at the Eastern end of the state. It is a rather long drive over very flat roads (very old mountains, my scientific hubby loves to say) to get to Colorado.

But even though I am not originally from here it's a pretty nice place to be.

I adore storms ... but, then again, I don't live where tornados are a threat.

I love sitting on the porch and watching storms, cool yet dry, and more exciting then the tv at times!

*nods* I've always enjoyed thunderstorms ... but ever since the rainy day story challenge last fall, the rain gets to me too. :catroar:

rain has always been a turn on for me...that challenge did give me more images to work with, and I have personal memories that make rain erotic...lightning is more of a beauty and wonder thing...it is the wet, gentle stuff that is erotic.

[shameless plug] If y'all like tornados, have I got a story for you! [/shameless plug]

;)

Now I love to feel that warm southern rain
Just to hear it fall is the sweetest sounding things
And to see it fall on your simple country dress
It's like heaven to me I must confess
