The village was one that worked well on it's own, rarely anyone, other than merchants ventured out of town. The elders always warned of dangers in the dark woods and along the roads. The young women were advised to always be accompanied by a father or a brother.
Scarlet always hated the isolation. She felt as if there was so much more out there in the world except their small village. Women never left. They were born, married and died within the confines of the village walls. It was just her and her mother now. Her father had left into the woods one evening and had never returned. Her mother Rose had not been the same since her disappearance. She became withdrawn from the community. People say she drove her father away.
Everyday scarlet would leave the house to get away. Mostly wander the streets of the village, picking up bread and supples for supper. Sometimes she would skirt the edges of the village the edged the woods. She longed to see what was out there. There had to be something out there.
One morning she awoke to scream. Her mother's scream.
“Mother!. What is worng.”
“I had a dream, your father, he is still out there.”
“Father left many years ago.”
“Go child, you must go find him. I heard of a nearby village with wise men who know of things. Go there and find answers.”
“Mother, I can not leave the village.” the worry in her voice grew with each second.
“GO!.” the fear in her mother's eyes scared her.
She grabbed her red cloak and wrapped it around her shoulders and fled from the house. The notion of her father still bing alive sent her into a trance as she made her way to the edge of the village to the gates.
“Where do you think you are going scarlet?”
“Um....” she paused for a second. “Olaf, I just need to see my grandmother, she lives just down the path. I'll be back before nightfall.” the tall guard smiled. He had always had a soft spot for the girl.
“Ok, just be back soon. I want you to be safe.”
“Thank you Olaf, you have always been so kind to us.” and with that, she slipped though the gates and down the path to the next village
