Through the Lens

Name: Adrian Clark
Height: 6 foot
Age: 46
Build: broad, stocky, a former amateur rugby player he still exercised on his bike mostly but middle age spread was gaining momentum on him.
Hair: Dark, partially bald
Eyes: Sea blue

Adrian walked out of the kitchen, carrying the drinks for his guests. It was Boxing day, and the traditional Christmas social. He lived on a small close of 8 houses, and fortunately all of the residents clicked to a greater or lesser extent, and so a sense of a local community ensured. Each year, someone would open their house boxing day and this year it was their turn to be the hosts; His long standing wife Jane, and himself. They had no children. Whilst neither of them were religious, if they were unable to have children, it was nature’s way, and so why fight it.

On the floor under the Christmas tree was the pile of opened presents, yet to be sold on ebay or stored around the house. His own presents included a new lens for his Nikon DSLR and a couple of photography books.

Adrian was a keen amateur photographer having started with film in his mid teens. But as he got older, and the cost of film developing rose, he ended up taking a break. But with the development of digital SLRs in 2002 or so, his interest in photography was re-kindled when he bought himself the Nikon D70, the first DSLR for the amateur.

He approached the guests, as he offered them their drinks, offering Odile and her mother their drinks first, and then her father his beer. They spoke briefly before he moved on as the doorbell rang. For the first couple of hours or so, the hose was rather busy as neighbours and a couple of their friends popped by to the open house, but by four, as the winter darkness settled down, there were only a few neighbors remaining. As he returned from the kitchen, he saw Odile sitting in the arm chair, flicking through one of his photography books, ‘Outdoor Portraiture’

She was 19, and had lived next door almost ten years; and had blossomed into an alluring young woman. She was pretty in a plain manner in his eyes, with a small frame but still feminine with the right curves to emphasise her womanhood whilst not being too distracting. She wore a simple v neck knitted top, suiting her slender build, the V neck hinting at her small yet perky cleavage, without actually revealing anything, Her legs were enveloped in black slightly glossy leggings.

He approached her…

“So did you get any good presents gorgeous?”

He knew what her parents, her family had saved for between them, a large combined present of a camera. They asked his advice, which he gave, though he wasn't sure what camera Odile wanted. One moment it was a Nikon, the following day it was a Cannon. He advised Nikon, ultimately because he had a Nikon set up so she could borrow his lenses. He would happily trust her with his cheaper lenses at least to begin with, until she could afford her own set...

Name: Odile Kincaid
Age: 19
Height: 5'2 1/2
Appearance: Medium length wavy hair in light golden browns with hints of copper and mahogany and smoky undertones. Hazel green eyes with an explosion of gold and honey flecks. Neutral tone porcelain fair skin with a scattering of freckles heaviest across her cheekbones and nose. Naturally pale pink lips on the thinner side of a cupid's bow shape. Short but built elegantly with a graceful neckline, feminine shoulders, perfectly formed handfuls perky mounds without the sag of age, trim waist with a womanly flair to her hips and firmly rounded rear end, proportioned with more legs than torso and smallish dancer's feet.

As a child growing up Odile’s favorite toy was the family’s Polaroid SX-70. The sound and instant gratification of a picture was guaranteed to make the toddler laugh not matter the situation. When Odile was responsible enough to warrant a camera of her own she was given a Polaroid Spectra System. It became a part of the growing girl, like a finger or a toe, and for years Odile was satisfied with the Polaroid she called “Stanley”. As Odile grew older, her interests broadened but her passion for photography stayed. Like her older brother collecting gaming systems, Odile collected cameras and equipment of the sort. It wasn’t a massive collection or even something one could call large but it was Odile’s and she cherished what she did have.

There wasn’t real skill in what Odile did, she for the most part fiddled with the knobs and pointed and clicked, learning by experiment more than studied lessons. She didn’t have the proper terms for what she did, it was just ‘Turn the knob this way when it’s dark” or ‘Turn this know that way if what she was taking a picture of something fast moving”. What she really wanted to learn was how to develop black and white pictures at home. It just felt like the right step in her hobby and with high hopes she looked at her first year of college and the few photography classes she was enrolled in as a way to learn more about what she loved.

Unsure of what Odile wants to do with her life she stuck close to home, saving money by not moving out and going to the nearby community college. She had a dream as a kid of becoming a National Geographic photographer but was convinced by others that she had to pick a reliable career. Still holding on to her dream, not yet ready to give up Odile tries to find a middle ground between dreams and reality.

----------------------------------------

The best part of Christmas for Odile was the pictures of family and friends that she managed to capture. The friends and family that came by the house to drop off gifts or just to say hello passed around the Fujifilm instax mini 90 taking pictures that they would paste to the memory book near the front door. Many of them wrote a little something in the book next to the polaroid like picture. It was a gift for Odile because the next morning she still had something to open even after the day after Christmas. Not to say that the gifts that were wrapped up didn't bring a smile to her face, well at least they normally do.

This year Odile was gifted with a new camera, a gift that should have made the girl's year but it didn't. It made her feel petty and spoiled but she couldn't help but feel bummed when she saw the camera that her family was so proud about betting her. The Nikon D3300 was a really nice camera but it was digital and Odile felt like she had a relationship with her film cameras that she didn't want to tarnish with the cheap feeling of something printed off your computer. For her family's sake she smiled and played nice but inside she whined and moaned about the Nikon FE or Canon AE-1 she wished she had.

Odile wasn't in the mood for the neighborhood Boxing Day party, she was was sour about her new camera, so much so that when Odile turned up with her parents at Adrian's house she didn't have a single camera with her. An oddity for the girl who carried on around with her like it was a part of her body. For the most part Odile tried to play the part of a happy party goer but the moment is was polite to leave the talking group, she did, finding a quiet corner in Adrian's kitchen to browse through a book.

“So did you get any good presents gorgeous?”

Adrian's voice caught Odile off guard and she smiled up at him. "They were good." She frowned. "Just not what I wanted." The frown deepened and she put the book down. "It's a digital camera, similar to yours, I just don't know how I feel about it being digital to be honest. It just feels, I don't know, romance-less?" She knew Adrian shared the same appreciation for photography as she did in a broader sense. Odile felt horrible saying it aloud, made her feel more like a spoiled kid then she already did, but this was Adrian and someone she felt she could trust with her true feelings. She wouldn't have said anything if she knew he had chipped in on the cost.

"I don't know." She sighed standing from the chair and approaching Adrian. "How do you like yours?" She asked needing to hear from someone she knew to tell her that they were good cameras and that she wasn't cheating on her love of film with the digital gift she was given.

Adrian detected a sadness, a frustration in Odile's voice. As he knelt beside her on the floor, as she sat in the corner chair he suddenly realised she didn't have a camera with her at all.

"It's a digital camera, similar to yours, I just don't know how I feel about it being digital to be honest. It just feels, I don't know, romance-less?"

He nodded, partly in agreement. "You do have a point Odile, you really do. But how many times have you got a film back from being developed and found that most of the photos were not that great? Or you have been some where and you had to limit the number of photos due to lack of film?"

He sipped his wine as he watched her, her purplish sheer top exposing a hint of a bra underneath as he returned to looking at her face as they chatted.

"How do you like yours?"

"I love it, though I do miss Film, and I have been known to go and buy some, but it is getting more and more expensive and it is less forgiving if you make a mistake..."

"Have you picked it up and used it yet Odile?"

He watched her shake her head side to side.

"Fancy going out tomorrow some where and take our cameras? Maybe a park, or a High street or anywhere where you feel comfortable? And then you can take both cameras and use both?"

He smiled at her as she contemplated her response.
