I'm currently working on a story where the main characters are a m/f couple facing a long distant relationship due to a work assignment. They are in a committed relationship and have never explored taking on another partner. They make up for their separation sexually in a variety of ways (phone sex, skyping etc). They get to a point where they consider having another male step in to have sex with the female while her partner watches via Skype. This leads into an exploration of adding a third partner sexually, not only online, but in real life when he returns home (male and eventually a female).

I'm interested in hearing how couples decide to add a third to their sex life.

How do you deal with jealousy, or is there any?

What turns you on by watching another person have sex with someone you love?

My question is for anyone that has had a relationship similar to what I described. I'm not wanting a cuckhold situation. I have the couple exploring the idea together. They are in control as partners, and there's no real emotional attachment to the third. At least not in a sense of commitment, more just having an occasional threesome.

Is that possible? Can you add a third without becoming emotionally attached?

Any details or advice would be appreciated. I'm very interested in learning more about this lifestyle and appreciate your help!

I'm currently working on a storyline not so different than yours in a few areas. It's a love triangle between a boyfriend, his girlfriend, and the transvestite main character ( Ashleigh ) that's caught in the crossfire. It's a complex, dialogue driven story that already has deceit, betrayal, and cheating in it already.... I haven't introduced Jealousy into the storyline yet, but I have two planned ideas on how to use it. One main way is for a supporting character to use it to move one character into a position to strengthen the budding relationship between two main characters. And the second way is to drive a spike into the relationship between two main characters that will help push Ashleigh from one partner to the other. It's complicated. I'm up to chapter 9, just posted chapter 10. It will be a couple more chapters in before I tangle the whole triangle in jealousy because that's probably the key element that destroys love triangles right after betrayal.

I've never been in such a situation in real life, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. But I would think in ANY situation where one partner gets to have extramarital sex, and the other one doesn't, there are going to be jealousy issues.

(Even if they BOTH get to have fringe benefits, jealousy issues are possible, but that wasn't the question.)

When one gets fucked and the other doesn't, there'll be issues, for sure. They can both take lovers, and be open about it or not, but the relationship will be fucked. Unless they've set open-fucking rules as their norm -- see What Is Cheating? Do they expect exclusivity? Can they waive exclusivity? Will they want to be the same as they were when/if they rejoin?

Their options: Masturbate a lot. Stay faithful, maybe with intermittent rejoinings. Fuck whomever they want till they rejoin. Fuck away, and go their own ways. Take lovers and bring them to the rejoining -- a hot four-way. Which do you think is most realistic?
