Palestinians and President Bush
From Mr Ian Hartill
Sir, President Bush’s speech (reports, later editions, June 25) recognises that a political solution to the Arab-Israeli dispute must be found and the most likely is a two-state system. However, his inclusion of a number of get-out clauses suggests that his commitment is less than wholehearted.
The most important of these is his insistence that the reward of a two-state system is contingent on an end to Arab terrorism. However, as Joshua Rowe (letter, June 26; see also letters, June 28) has pointed out, Palestinian Arabs have always made it clear that they will resist the creation of a Jewish state in Palestine. No one has ever tried to persuade the Palestinian Arabs that it is right that they should give up part of their homeland to accommodate a Jewish national home.
The only justification that the Partition Commission of 1938 could advance was that Jewish settlement would increase prosperity in Palestine and its indigenous people would thus benefit. In 1947, when the UN imposed partition and the creation of Israel, it made no effort to persuade the Palestinian Arabs of the rightness of its decision.
Partition inflicted a grave injustice on the Palestinian Arabs and a means of peacefully reconciling them to the rightful existence of Israel must be found. The lead should be taken by Israel.
Yours sincerely,
IAN J. HARTILL

From Mr Roger Radford
Sir, How frustrating it must be for President Bush when Jack Straw hurriedly states that Britain will recognise Yassir Arafat as leader of the Palestinians should he be re-elected in any new elections. How simple it will be for Arafat, a man who cavorts with terror, to arrange a no-hoper to stand against him while any true opposition cowers in fear.
Will our naive leaders ever understand that there is no such animal as democracy in the Arab world and never will be if the likes of Arafat remain in power?
Yours,
ROGER RADFORD,
June 26.
From Mrs Rosalind Gemal
Sir, If despair is the reason for homicide bombing, why do the terrorists 10-15 years older than the youngsters they send to their deaths not join in? After all, they have had that extra length of time to despair. Instead, they are the ones dodging round the West Bank and the Gaza Strip intent on saving their own skins while instigating murder and mayhem and asking the world for sympathy.
Jack Straw, with his “degree of compassion” (Comment, June 25) for homicide bombers, is yet another gullible dupe in a clever propaganda war waged by the Palestinians.
Yours,
ROSALIND GEMAL,
June 28.
