OK, here goes!

Thread for the devout** and creedless. Comprises all non evangelical sorts, emphasizing peaceful way of life, over 'belief'.
Understands 'faith' primarily as faithfulness in that way.
Including quasi theists and deistic agnostics, and such groups as Unitarians, Quaker, Amish, Brethren, and any surviving Cathari, Waldensians, etc.

"Meet together and know one another in that which is eternal."

Thought (quotation) for the day. Yours are welcome.

LOL Not sure about the original, but translated it would be something like this:

If everybody listened to everybody, we'd be killing time instead of people.

I'm a Theist! And proud of it. Hate religion, but quite fond of God.

Quote for the day:
I'm a lapsed agnostic; I believe in God. I'm just not sure I trust him.

Pure, I'll join your sect. Where do I sign? How much do I have to pay to get a good pew?

Angrily ambivalent R. Catholic here.

Hey Perdy, that's only five words... but they worked on me

Good morning, J. Not sure where this goes, but I like the title. It needs a novel attached to it.

What some of the groups have in common is the realization (view) that one's "beliefs" are not the key issue. That a set of 'beliefs' defines a religion or denomination is an endemic Western confusion seen at such sites as "belief.net". Missing is the concept "way of life."

It's been said that all these 'creedless' or 'who the fuck knows' or
'there's a God but he's not been around lately' positions offer no solace. No big solace. Like heaven, rewards.

Of course it's heartening to hear "Thanks for the new guitar, Dad/Mom!" but that's a small flicker indeed.

What do you do (Where do you look) for solace/encouragement?
Is the 'science' story at all helpful-- that you're a pretty tiny episode in the few billion years of life on earth?

Solace. I guess that's what the people you love are for.

But I have no beef with where I'm placed, cosmically. I don't qualify for your thread, anyhow. No devotional bone in this body, not now.

hi cant,
being creedless and assiduously non-devout is also welcome
:rose:

Here is one possible marker distinguished the devout/devoted and creedless from the Sades and Hobbes's: Is it correct or appropriate to feel *gratitude* for one's life (i.e., its contents, events)? I do not simply mean gratitude to those who provided you with essential services, e.g., your parents when you were young.

My wife finds her life to have been inordinately fortunate, but I'm not so sure. I wouldn't have anyone to thank or to blame, and being a middleclass American, I suppose it would have to be a thank you to whatever it was.

The thing that makes me want to say it's inappropriate is the question of who is deserving.

I'm not convinced I deserve the fortune I've had, and I know some extraordinary people, particularly in the third world, who never deserved the pain they endured. Children are maimed by disease and malnutrition and born into horrible destitution. Yet I do quite well.

So whatever it is I would be thanking is an ass.

Personally, I'd like to go back to the old gods...

I would happily sacrifice a few lambs to the God of Fuck.

some of the old gods at least had character. and that includes Yahweh of olden times, known for rants, vindictiveness, and changes of mind. How the fuck can one relate to eternal immutable Good?
