It was pretty dumb, for a variety of reasons, but I don't see why they had to arrest the guy for it.
I wonder if the critter was actually dead. Opossums are known for their ability to simulate being dead when threatened by predators.

I agree, but he was just charged with public drunkenness, not DUI. There was nothing said about his having left his car to try to revive the possum.

It was just the wrong 'possum...that's all.....
Perhaps the State Troopers were not initially clear on how just intoxicated this guy was. After all, trying to help out an injured 'possum by giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation is indeed a noble and laudable act. However they were later to describe the critter as "long dead". Perhaps that's how they were convinced the guy was three sheets to the wind.
