Those voices

I don't know why it is, but it happens to me, too. Each character has their own voice. I think it helps me write the characters better. It lets me know, "No, Marietta wouldn't say that. She would say it this way. I just chalk it up to the peculiarities of the muse. I have learned not to question her.

The voices of your characters channeling through you? When I write dialogue, I can hear them talking in my head.

These are different from the other voices. You know, the ones that tell me to do things. Bad things. Dirty things. ;)

I pay close attention to the voices that tell me to do dirty things.

They're my friends.

With me, the story unfolds as a movie in my head. So I'll be hearing the dialogue of the characters. And since I write in first person so much, the thoughts and feelings of the narrator as well.

Yes -- this is what makes writing worthwhile. When it is going correctly, I am often completely surprised by where the writing is taking me. Actually, maybe those bad little voices are whispering a few suggestions also.

I've noticed this for a long time, but never really gave it much thought until lately.
Whenever I'm trying to write something fictional I hear a voice that is not my natural voice. Actually it's several different voices, dialects or tones that are not mine when I speak or think on my own. Like I'm doing an actor's voice-over for a radio theatre show or something.
Now when I write something more rambling nonfiction - like a letter, or even here - I'm hearing my own voice. Or when I mess around with poetry, then the voice feels natural.

Wonder why this is?

I don't know but I think it is more common amongst writers. A more general question I asked of my friends once was, when you read, do you hear the voices of the characters. Most said no. I found that very interesting because I definitely do. It's basically the same thing but I think those of us who hear the voices when we read are more drawn to writing ourselves.

I hear the characters talking to me, but oftentimes have to figure out what they're doing. The narrator in my head goes out for coffee an awful lot.

I hear them too when I read and write.

So it isn't necessarily a bad thing to hear another voice when I try to write narrative fiction?
Everyone who posted here has said they also hear the voices. Do you really think we're going to say that's a bad thing? :catroar:

They don't hear the characters' voices? Interesting. I just assumed everyone did. I'll have to ask my friends about that.
When I write, I definitely hear the characters, but not a narrative voice unless I'm writing 1st person. When I write poetry, the voice I hear seems to fit the mood of the poem, but somewhat authoritative.

Guess they can stay, then.
If they'd just take out the trash once in a while...
Really? I want them to think up witty remarks so I can say them rather than just standing there going..."uh...uh...uh...yeah...". ;)

I wish they'd let me tell a story once in a while, but they always move in and take over. Always hogging the microphone, clearing the room, making me look bad.
Yep! And getting your fingers involved so they write that guy's story and not yours.

Now, I'm all disappointed.. where's your pic, Tim?
I'm gonna go pout now.

You mean I gotta fight a pack of angry nuns for it?
What exactly are they doing with your pic, I wonder... hmmnmm...
