Venomous spiders nest near Queen's home

Nests of rare venomous spiders have been found near Windsor Castle and could be living underneath the royal estate itself.
A leading entomologist believes they may be a new species or a type of spider previously thought to have been extinct for thousands of years.

BT engineers uncovered the spiders last week when they were laying underground cables at Windsor Great Park in Berkshire.

The discovery of the rusty red and black spiders, with leg-spans of up to 9cm, is being described as "extremely exciting".

Graham Smith, a member of Project-ARK conservation team which aims to preserve endangered species, warned that the spiders could attack.

"The species is certainly venomous and the jaws are strong enough to penetrate the human skin."

There are about 50,000 species of spider worldwide, only some of which are known to be poisonous.

'Could be thousands'

Until this week none of these were thought to be found in the UK.

Experts cannot tell how long the spiders had been in the Royal Park as they live underground.

Mr Smith said: "There could be thousands and thousands of them.

"It would be no surprise if they are living underneath Windsor Castle itself."

The spiders could not be repelled by conventional means as attempts to fumigate the species would run the risk of spreading them further afield.

Work stopped

It may even be illegal if they are found to be an endangered species.

A BT spokesman said: "Our engineers were not attacked, but we have stopped work at the site until we know exactly what they are."

Entomologists are examining samples of the spiders in an attempt to identify them.

The team of experts from Project-ARK will spend the next few days studying the behaviour of the spiders using electronic cameras.

They're coming to get you!
First they will start by creeping into your cellar from cracks in the wall, from tunnels and burrows deep underground they will scurry up into your basements. Then the invasion will begin, with blood curdling screams and swarming spiders...People running around in terror slamming into walls with heads bursting like over-ripe tomatoes! :p

The best part is you can't kill them because you’re leftist liberal "green party" types have designated them as an endangered species. lol So you can't harm the precious spiders or the environmental whackos will haul your ass to jail. Maybe if you ask them nicely and politely beg to them they will only bite you on the finger or toes or some shit like that instead of crawling all over your face, going to town on you're face and repeatedly biting you in the eyeball while you are laying in bed at night in the dark. lol

cool they sound cute ... why would i want to hurt them or kill them ?

Because they are big and aggressive and have huge venom-filled jaws. They are gonna jump all over you and go ape-shit! They're gonna start biting you and stuff and running around, then more biting, then resting for awhile, then back to biting and running around!

You may not want to hurt them but they want to hurt YOU BAD! In fact, they are probably holding secret meeting right now in your basement, about like what's the best methods of biting you and running around! :D

they wouldnt hurt me im their friend

dangerous creatures never attack greenpeace leftists :)

That's not what I heard, I heard they just love eating Greenpeace-types because they know they wont fight back! :p
Plus since they are all vegans they are a mighty nutritious snack with half the fat (and fight) of a meat-eater!

In this case the centipedes would make a temporary alliance with the spiders in order to join forces so that they can sting and bite as many British people as possible, I'm sure of it, I can feel it in my bones! :D

But the movie isn't released over here...

for another two weeks!

Damn Publicity Department got it wrong again. That story's meant for the Sunday papers...

:D

postdate

actually the date on the story is:

Tuesday, 19 June, 2001, 11:47 GMT 12:47 UK

I actually posted a whole big angry thread about it on another board when it first came out. Its seems too incredible to be true… /shrug But it is on the BBC which is a legit news site...I haven't been able to ascertain the veracity of the report since then.

However, I will say this, IF it IS TRUE, I would be rightfully pissed that my safety was being compromised while working in these tunnels by a bunch of Green party tree-huggers (or in this case, spider-huggers). Let's see them crawl through these dank, dark tunnels day in and day out with these spiders installing cables and such in order to scratch by on a crummy blue-collar paycheck.

Havn'y heard anything about it this year but it could be masked by the anount of news about the venemous inhabitants of Windsor Castle!:D

Spiders

Spiders don,t attack unless they think you are a threat or food.

Frimost unless you are really small:D :D you're not going to be food as for the threat I think the spiders know they are safe from you:p :p :p

Wayward Spiders and other creepy crawlies......

Get fed to my Tarantula...

They make less noise than crickets, and she'll eat anything smaller than her that moves.

Well I don't know about anyone else, but if I see a spider that has a 9cm leg span... that fucker's toast! Now where did I put that flamethrower?

From the experience of crawling through attics, basements and crawlspaces over the years... I've seen lots n lots of the creepy crawly thingies.... EEWWWWWWWEEEEEEEE!!!!! Damn yucky critters.

If the tree huggers want to save them, then they can have 'em all move in with them.

That report is well out of date.

We imported a shitload of spider eating toads and they got rid of the lot.

Then they went after the native spiders. Then decided that other
spider sized critters were good eating.

We ain't got no more spider sized beasties.Got a lotta toads though.

Now about those damn Pigeons.

Based on my visits to the UK, I'd say you need to import Pigeon eating Toads. Let 'em go in the Tube stations (Would they "Mind The Gap?") and Trafalgar Square. They might go after the gulls in Brighton, too!

On a more serious note, San Francisco has a flock of feral Conures that I've visited several times. Truly an amazing sight! Check 'em out at Telegraph Hill if you're ever able to do so, or go to www.wildparrots.com.
