OOC: Please hold the 'flaming' to a minimum - I have been told off by experts..LOL.

On the first SRP page over 60% of the threads are 'closed.' Now, I have been guilty myself of participating in closed threads. We all enjoy interacting in this medium with people who are fun and write well (and interact with us in a way that we find fun). This is not meant to criticize anyone's skill, by the way.

I have a suggestion....a middle ground as it were. If your private thread has room for more than two players, why not invite others (newbies included) to PM you to see if they might play a role? We sometimes miss really talented writers and/or turn them off by being too clubby. While several players complicate the 'script,' the results can sometimes be really good.

Whew....I pontificate on this subject from time to time. After all, we all were new at one time. I surely have had a lot of fun and learned a great deal from many of my new and old friends and 'playmates' here on lit.

Thank you...whoever you are, for reading this post.

I couldn't resist a thread created by Thor!

Here's another suggestion - If you like a particular thread and can create a character to fit with the already created story, why not PM the creator.

Thor I'm not sure that "guilty" is the right term to use in referring to closed threads.
I agree there are a lot of them.
I try myself for a mix of both kinds.
There are good reasons for a thread to be closed. Often a tight plot development requires it. Or to create a sensuous and intimate interplay between two players. Not every story demands a large cast.
I open thread after thread with complex plot developments carefully worked out and open them for players only to have them stagger and then die as well intentioned people lose interest or are called away.
Don't get me wrong. I think there is a place for big open threads that can be malleable to change as the casts change, be able to roll with the punches another words.
But there is also a place for the more highly structured closed threads as well.
I see nothing wrong with a 50/50 balance between the two.

Good points!

And I have one more suggestion to add:

Those who join and are new in our community are free to start their own threads - unlimited , inviting in whoever .. and before you know it (oh yeah, trust me, once you started it there is NO WAY BACK! *insert evil laughter here*) you are anything but new !!

Strange enough there will develope new "groups" and "circles", constantly, eternaly ... and there will always be people more or less compatible in style and content of their writing.

And that is not a fact related to being "old" or "new" around Literotica - it is just the way goup dynamics work.

On the same token - those circles aren't "fixed", they shift, they change, and that is what keeps that little corner of Lit so sparkling and alive.

I'm with Chanaud - who can truly resist Thor?

I do remember as a "newbie" here being intimidated a bit by the number of "closed" threads. I wondered then if I would ever attain the status of being asked to be a participant in a "closed thread". Seems silly now, but I do remember it as being an issue.

I have to agree with Ariosto, in that sometimes you get a plot in mind and have very specifics in regards to its development. You need to be completely in tune with another writer to start it and complete it.

And, yet, nothing beats the kick of writing with a new writer and getting used to their style - only to discover you have found a "gem"!

But, as Hecate states, I do think people are draw together because of writing styles and comfort levels. I don't think this is done "on purpose" - just a normal outcome.

I do think it's important to welcome newcomers to the board, and to encourage them to start posting to stories. I've heard many "newbies" state they don't think they can do. Well, I knew my first efforts were less than stellar! I think it's important to continue to encourage and to help - and to be open if some one suggests a character or plot development!

MY 2 CENTS

In 2000, I posted briefly in SRP (and I believe have posted with you, Thor, also). At that time, closed threads were not common, in fact, although nobody said so, I perceived that people thought it was a dissocial thing to do. And when I met a guy with whom I really "clicked" (literary wise), we decided to leave SRP and continued to e-mail back and forth for about a year, SRP-ing in private. In hindsight, I think we deprived other SRP patrons of a very hot and steamy story (stories), that no doubt others would have enjoyed, had we posted it as a closed thread on SRP.

Thus, I would say, let those who want a closed thread do so, but don't make every thread you start a closed one. Balance is the word, like Ari does. Because there is no doubt that your thread will be uncontrollable once it is open for all. And that can certainly change or destroy your original idea. It has happened before and doubtless will happen again. But on the positive side, it sometimes develops into a better thing than you imagined!

<---dusting off old chestnut

It has been two whole months since I last dredged up this topic. I do it again - primarily - for newer players that have not had the 'benefit' of my speech from my lonely podium. The 'older' players are already settled into their patterns. Although (blush) I have been in closed threads myself, a balance (as Kineser so articulately pointed out) provides a healthy blend. If you are interested, a cursory scan of the current SRP board yielded the fact that almost 50% of the newest threads are closed...........

Having said all that, I will wait until next week to start my very first closed thread.......... (chuckling as he segues off into the rising sun).

It's about damn time, Thor! I've been waiting for how long now.....3 weeks?

I've almost given up hope, thinking my dear, Thor has abandoned me.

<grin>

chanaud, you grab him and i will close this thread.

Just you, me and the God.

If it's not to late ...pelting along after Thor with Chanaud and Merelen...I'd like to add another good reason for closed threads and that is the proliferation of very rapidly placed short posts that quickly turn an open thread into one resembling a one on one chat room where less frequent posters get lost and left behind...speaking of which, Ari collapses unable to keep up with the fleet footed women and the lightening bolt that is Thor....

Oh my, I've never had sex with God!

Hmmm...I wonder if it's going to be a Divine Intervention! <grin>

Hey, I'm game Merelan if you are...

<singing out> Oh Thoooooooooooor!!!

Ari, don't leave in a haste. Join us...

We could always use ari here as practise... eyeing his cute ass on the floor.

I do believe the great God has abandoned us once more. <mumbles> Chicken!

*Turning to Ari* Guess, you're stuck with us!

short post

........!!!!!!!!!! Damn, I have not started a controversy in almost a month. Today's closed thread count on the first page of SRP is 63%......

Thor...just curious...who does the math to come up with the 63%? That must be an onerous task. Opening up each thread to see with ones are open and which ones are closed!

BTW...I do not think we have met formally. But I'm a friend of chanaud's and could not resist jumping in to tease you! Pleased to meet you btw! :p (P.S. this is my first froggy face too! I hope you feel honoured!)

Thor........Your public craves your attention! Where are you big guy? I've been pondering a new thread, and had you in mind. I'm sorry things did gel on Prusser! Give me a second chance?

Kit

<--big silly grin!

Ty-------Mya for the frog (although I am a prince LOL). I do the math, exhaustive regression analysis, triply checked..... *coughcoughbullshitcoughcough*.....<weg>
The pleasure is all mine! (I love to banter and tease too!

Moon....it has been a long time....California is soaking up a lotta time.....:)

and Lady_Kit......I felt a bit out of synch at Pusser....hence my departure in 8616Y into the mist.... When I am able to back down from my R/T demands, I would love to write with you...indeed, with all of the nice people here...:):)

*bump*

I see some improvement......only 45% are closed. And, hurrah, some people are putting 'closed' in the title line. Thank you all for hearing my every two month (or so) refrain.

I'm tryin' to be good, Thor. ::flashes her big bright baby blues at him::

*bump*

I detect regression. Over 65% of the first page are "closed." With my usual pleasant wheedling.....could you 'closed writers' put (closed) in the subject line? Thank you!

Perhaps we need a new board entitled "CLOSED SRP?" Perhaps I will write the management.

<bump>

For my missing friend. Where are you, dear?

I've come to the conclusion that a donna bella had discovered your wicked soul and had taken revenge by throwing you out of the gondola. <grin>
