Almost three decades ago were the days of the BBSes (bulletin board systems) that offered chain stories. Much like the environment you see around Literotica here. However there was on a few boards in my local area was an advanced form of chain story for the top writers of the linked boards, though not a competition per se as in awarded points.

The system was called 'The Arena Chain' Writers would develop their primary, main and secondary characters as well as a few NPCs of their own then exchange character sheets much like role play systems. The writers were able to trade the NPCs based in the story's universe and the time/personality of the NPCs. For example they couldn't be in two places at once and would have the same or similar motivations yet told from a different perspective or writing style.

The secondary characters were tradable through hand off. This meant that the writer in these cross linked stories that was responsible for or in charge of governing lets say the docks area of Madupopolis would pick up the writing of the secondary character's actions based on the persona and characteristics of the said handed off character. The handed off secondary character(s) would then be exclusively written by the author receiving them until they were once again traded.

Main characters were the responsibility of the originating creator and interacted through collaboration efforts. Although most large interactions would be by vote system of the involved authors so that a main or primary character could not be whisked away to safety by a quick rewrite. All involved author's of a story line would do a simultaneous post of that week's story. This would represent a situation of someone walking up to you and suddenly slapping you, catching you completely by surprise. You'd not be able to do a quick rewrite and god mod having the intuition or knowledge of it before hand to duck at the that exact moment with some form of 'spider sense'.

There would be several dozen off shoot stories, a main story per author or per main character perspective and thousands of hilarious childish arguments. (yes it wasn't easy but hells bells it was fun) I would enjoy participating once again in an Arena Chain development and chiseling out some new and interesting creativity.

In the days of the BBSes, a started story or universe could take weeks to begin as characters were developed. Once the stories began though, with any luck, they'd flow rapidly as the authors would have others to basically play off of as proverbial muses. I've seen and participated in a single story line that lasted over 5 years.

Perhaps Literotica Management might be interested in setting up areas of viewing the Arena Chain stories so that readers can easily find and cross reference various linked story line 'universes'.

--To the Forum Op should it apply: I realize this idea might not be a new one, as I mentioned it's from the ancient days of old. I hope it isn't a re-post of a currently active idea. I haven't had the time as yet to scour the many forum posts to find out.
