OKay so it's looking like a bit of a zoo around here now. As I have mentioned we have a couple of Muskovy Ducks that are hanging around here. They come around and look for handouts.
This morning I was out in the yard doing some raking when I heard a rustling in the bushes next to the patio. When I went over and looked I found not one but three very small Squirrels.
They had fur and were obviously weened but they were too small to be running around alone. They tried to run away from me but they were too weak to go very far. I easily scooped them up and placed them in a box.
I filled a bowl with some peanuts and some Pine Nuts and placed that in the box. I filled another bowl with water and placed that in the box as well. Then I went back to work.
When I went to look into the box an hour later they were curled around each other asleep. The food bowl was almost empty and the water bowl was down by quite a bit. I moved the box into the shade of the bushes alongside the patio and went back to work.
A short while later my wife and I went for our ride. When we got back home I looked into the box and found it empty. I was happy to see this and took the box away.
This evening I went out into the yard and was watering the flowers when I heard a noise in the pine tree next to the patio. When I looked I could see three little furry faces looking out at me. I went inside and filled the food and water bowls and carried them out. I set the water bowl next to the base of the tree and placed the food bowl next to my feet as I sat next to the tree. As soon as I sat down and stopped moving the critters came scampering down. They stopped at the water bowl first and took a nice long drink, then they came over to the food bowl.
Before I knew it I was being swarmed by three tree rats. They were climbing on me and stopping to grab a snack. They were allowing me to scratch them as they ate. They would climb on me and stop to look at the cats inside the patio. They had no fear and they seemed to enjoy my company.
When the food bowl was empty they hung around for a bit letting me scratch them before heading back into the tree, stopping only for another drink.
These are cute little buggers. The adults are tiny. With their tails they might be a foot long. These youngsters are maybe eight inches long. They are grey in color and have a white tip on their tails. They are nothing like the Grey Squirrels I'm used to from up north.
We shall see if they hang around, and if they do how they act around me and my wife.
