I am a non-traditional college student and would enjoy talking to more such students. I know how hard it can be to try to fit everything in especially if working full-time, going to school and raising a kid. I am personally only taking 2 classes as most of the courses are very homework intensive so I decided to not try the full load again. But even with 2 classes it will get pretty hectic.

So if you are a non-traditional student and would like someone to talk to, either post here, send a pm or send me an invite on yahoo. If you decide to send me an invite on yahoo, make sure you put in the optional area that you are a non-trad.

I do understand that this site is mainly for sex and erotica but hopefully that won't scare anyone from just wanting to chat/vent about problems from trying to be a student while living a regular life.

Yay another older student!

Nice to meet you; you'll definitely find a sympathetic ear here.

I'm in my 30's, and this is my first full-time semester back in 10 years. I took a single course last spring to get my feet wet, and apparently decided to get in over my head this semester. I also work full time.

I'm a junior, going for my BA in English for Licensure.

One thing I noticed, though, is that our "non-trad" way of going about getting a degree doesn't seem so non-trad anymore. Most of the folks in my classes thus far seem to be closer to my own age (and several much older, actually) than fresh out of high school.

Anyway, definitely glad to see there are more of us out there, and on Lit, no less.

(And belated welcome, by the way)

:)

Nice to meet you and welcome. I had to reply as you are attending my school...as it can only be BH that you are attending! I too was and am a non-traditional student. I am going again as a grad student. I work full-time and take a full load each semester. Any way nice to hear from the black hills!

Sorry no Basic High School here

I am actually a hardrocker and not a yellow jacket. I do live in BH town but it is worth the trip for the degree I will be getting. As you know, being a hardrocker (or Techie if you prefer) means I have a lot of fun with the folks around here.

Thanks for the belated welcome. I am going to school for a BS in Electrical Engineering and unfortunately the students are pretty much all younger and not long out of high school. I did meet one person who is older than me in one class but I am pretty sure I am the oldest in my other class.

Hope to hear from you and let me know how your classes are going.

They're going well so far, other than the fact that I'm definitely losing sleep.

I don't know how you do it : job, classes, parent.

How far along are you in your degree program?

Subscribing to the thread, and will be checking in now and again ... most likely when I'm supposed to be writing papers!

hey there dealer--
I just had to give you a word of encouragement. I have totally been where you are now. A few years ago I was in my last year of grad school, working full time, AND just had a new baby. There were many times I thought I couldn't handle it all. But just don't give up, and eventually the load will lighten. I truly commend you for undertaking such a demanding degree, esp. as an "older" student. Just hang in there, you can do it!!!

Thanks for the word of encouragement. I had to take last year off to deal with my divorce and child custody problems. My ex decided she didn't want to be married and was also hoping that I wouldn't want anything to do with my daughter (who is now about 18 months old). I have proven that not only am I going to be a major influence in my daughter's life but I'm also going to be a major pain in the ass to the ex.

I had my second day of classes with a homework assignment already handed in and another due next Friday. Thank goodness the first assignment was pretty easy to due since I can see them getting harder and thus meaning more time devoted to finishing it with just the next one. This is going to be a lot of work and just makes me glad I am just a part-time student instead of a full-time one.

Well I'm taking Jr. level classes but with all my previous credits from other attempts at college I'm considered a Sr. I actually have more credits than most grad students but that is because I changed my major too many times but am sticking to this one now.

Thanks for subscribing and I plan on subscribing to your Harley dreaming thread to hopefully be able to send you support on your classes and lifestyle goals.

Also I didn't know at the time but I had read your story and enjoyed it also. You will make a great teacher and hopefully you will also keep writing.

Thanks for the unexpected compliment :) Actually, once I am degreed in general licensure, I plan on taking additional courses (although I want a MA in another subject) in order to focus primarily on creative writing, which will hopefully improve my own along the way.

A funny thing : When I started, I wanted to be an English teacher. I changed majors like three different times (all while doing pre-reqs, so it wasn't all that bad) only to drop out in frustration. Now, 10 years later, I'm back to my original plan : to be an English teacher.

And thanks for checking out my Harley thread :) And I never turn down support!

:)

Good for you for fighting for your daughter! Putting up with the ex is a drag, but kids are cool, it's worth it. 18 mos old is a really fun age, too. I bet she's a doll! :)

Sounds like you are going to have a pretty work-intensive semester, yikes... School is so stressful. I've been finished for a while, and I STILL have nightmares where I dream about an exam I haven't studied for, or a huge project is due that I haven't even worked on...

Hang in there, and do try to work in some fun time. "All work and no play..."
:)

Great...that means the nightmares never stop...

*sigh*

:D

The nightmares will finally stop. (I can't guarantee when but I'm thinking they will stop for me when I take that big dirt nap).

How depressing!

On a lighter note, this is my third week (almost done) of school, and I've yet to have a music class. It's a Monday night class, and the first week of school started on a Wednesday (bizarre, I thought), so no class. The second Monday, I received a phone call saying that the instructor's father passed away, so no class. The third Monday was Labor Day...hmm.

And I'm pretty excited ... My Lit teacher's having his comprehensive finals for his doctorate next week, so no lit classes. Of course, that is not to say that there won't be homework (and a lot of it) but at least there will be three hours next week that I can do something else, even if it's just reading for his class.

Off to finish Huck Finn tonight...still a crap load of stuff to do before tomorrow afternoon.

How are things going your way, Dealer?

Just mt 2cents worth

Don't give up. I finished my degree and certification as a high school teacher the summer before my daughter began her senior year of high school. Wanna bet what the grade competition was like?

Talk about "I'll show you mine if you'll show me your's"!!!!!

I was 39 when I wore the mortar board and tassel. Now I'm 50. Next to Having kids it was the best thing I did even if it was way late.

Fight for your kids. The grandkids make it worth it!

Another week of classes done

Well yesterday saw week 2 of classes end with a short week for both. I can only say that it now starts to get really interesting to say the least with classes now going truly into the meat of the subjects. One of my classes shouldn't be too bad but the other is going to be a real bear.

Raidho, I hope that classes are going well for you and also that your exercise program is also going good.

Stuff like this makes me happy.

Thanks for sharing, Cad.

What are you taking this semester?

Going well, so far, just so much to do. I'm glad I have the weekends off (for now) to really take advantage of.

The exercise thing is going way better than I thought it would given work and class. I have copious amounts of reading to do, so I tend to try to do most of it on the bike, and I can either do laundry, wash dishes, or, if it's a shorter piece, write a summary of it while it's still fresh in my mind for a paper that's due.

The weekends are turning out to be extremely advantageous!

Looks like most of mine are going to be bears, just for the sheer amount of reading...

Hang in there :)

** bump **

How's the semester going, Dealer?

Mid-term week here, already. I can't believe it.
