while Coogler has 'moved on' after the Bank of America has 'made things right', this incident in Atlanta really should never have happened. All the teller AND her supervisor had to do was check his details first, confirming his identity...

The moviemaker was filming the sequel to the Disney-backed comic book blockbuster in Atlanta earlier this year, when he went to a local Bank of America branch to withdraw some money, according to the police report that was first shared by TMZ on Wednesday morning.

The 35-year-old director was wearing a hat, sunglasses and a face mask — the last item has become a common accessory during the COVID-19 pandemic — when he approached a teller and passed her a withdrawal slip, the police report said. Coogler had reportedly written a note on the back that read, “I would like to withdraw $12,000 cash from my checking account. Please do the money count somewhere else. I’d like to be discreet.”
The note and the large sum of money, which triggered an alarm on the banking system, appears to have made the Bank of America worker suspicious. The teller, described as a pregnant Black woman in the TMZ report, flagged the transaction for her supervisor. They called the police, and the authorities reportedly handcuffed Coogler and detained two other people who were waiting for the director outside in an SUV.

he might be alright with them now, but i wonder if he'll ever use that particular branch again. If I were he, i'd move ALL my money from that bank and put it in another.

I gotta say, I've walked into a financial institution before with a baseball cap on and immediately been asked to remove the cap, and I'm very white. Anything that obscures your appearance or prevents security cameras from getting a good look at your face is going to put bank employees on edge.

The "teller flagged this for her supervisor" part I get, because (leaving aside the mask because of course he had on a mask) if a guy wearing a cap and sunglasses inside a bank hands you a note, you might panic and not notice that it's actually a legitimate withdrawal slip. But I don't know why it progressed to the point where he got handcuffed. Proving he had an account at the bank should have been a simple process.

exactly

flagging for a suspicion is one thing, but easily verifiable i.d means it's plain wrong, whoever he was.

Yeah, he probably should have been in handcuffs last summer.
What makes you think he was involved in any rioting? He's the director of the film Black Panther, not an official of the Black Panther Party, which itself had no involvement in the rioting that I've heard of.

lol Are you really this racist? Arrested for what? Banking while being successful and black? Oh, I get it.. you think he's Huey P. Newton and not the record-breaking director.

tldr:
Reichguide thinks Coogler is the Director of the Black Pathers and not the director of Black Panther.

LOL. I read that and I thought, "Man, that's pretty harsh even for him." But it turns out he's just both really ignorant of pop culture (not surprising for someone who grew up when Rosemary Clooney was making hits) and unable to read the beginning of the quote which clearly states Coogler is a film director.

Of course generalizing is the best approach to finding a guilty party.

This thread illustrates the total fail of most people when it comes to what the police do when they're called.

The police will cuff ANYONE they feel needs to be restrained while they investigate what's going on. They do it because not doing it could result in someone getting killed. After all the facts are sorted out, if the suspect committed a crime, he's already bagged and waiting transport to jail. If he didn't, he gets uncuffed and apologized to.

None of that is racism or whatever the new buzzword is. It's the way it is because that's the process.

Which is why it's happening everywhere to everyone equally.

Had a client absentmindedly leave a pair of designer sunglasses on the top of her head while she was trying multiple pairs on. After buying a different pair, she headed for the door with the unpaid for pair still on her head. It was obviously an unintentional mistake and not shoplifting because she was wearing the paid for pair at the same time.

She was stopped and cuffed while the cops sorted out what happened. Why? Because that's what cops do (besides chase parked cars) and they don't give anyone the benefit of the doubt until after they have all the facts straight. Even though the security videos showed that she wasn't trying to run away and had actually paid for her purchase of the other pair, she was still handcuffed.

he entirely ignores the fact that this customer's identity was easily and immediately verifiable by having I.D and his account. So why were cops even called in the first place?

In Frisco, she might have been able to walk out with them.:D

Good on you deflecting here...well done.

She could have. The cops even said so after they uncuffed her.

I just keep wondering how the "systemic racism" crowd views a little old white lady in handcuffs as the cops somehow being racist towards minorities. I mean, how does a white granny getting arrested for suspected shoplifting mean that all those minorities who smash and grab and run are oppressed?
