New Sam Adams Recall Effort Planned

PORTLAND, Ore. -- A group hoping to recall Portland Mayor Sam Adams did not gather enough signatures, but will pass its signatures to a new recall effort that will continue the attempt to oust the mayor.

The group Recall Sam Adams needed 32,000 valid signatures by noon Monday in order to continue the recall effort, which began after Adams admitted to having a sexual relationship with Beau Breedlove, a teenage legislative intern.

Jasun Wurster, leader of the recall group, had 90 days to collect the signatures needed to move forward but came up short.

"We got over 30,000 signatures and that wasn't enough for me to submit the signatures to meet the minimum," Wurster said.

Okay, there are a few things wrong with this whole picture. First, Sam Adams was NOT "openly gay" until this whole story broke about a year ago. Then the story was all over the news with Adams claiming (a) everyone knew he was gay and (b) he and Breedlove had a "relationship" but never had sex until after the kid's 18the birthday. Breedlove, however, claimed they fucked like rabbits from day one.

Adams has tried to sweep this whole thing under the rug. Now it looks like someone is going to go for a recall and force him to vacate the office of Mayor. Personally, I think it's way too funny. Who really gives a rat's ass as long as he's not emptying the city coffers into his personal bank account?

Claiming Oregon as kind of a 'home State' although I was born elsewhere, I cringe over the Sam Adams controversy and the cross-dressing politician in another small Oregon town; both of which have had National News coverage.

Add to that the very high unemployment, among the worst in the Nation, and a State Legistlature than has continued to raise taxes on everything, so much so that a tax revolt via ballot measures is underway; then when that kid was suspended for the season from U of Oregon for sucker-punching a player on the Boiste State team that plucked the Ducks a few weeks ago....Oregon has earned its place as a Left Coast State with all the trimmings.

Hey, it used to be a really nice place, really!

If the page was under 18 when the affair began, that's against the law of course.

The fact that not enough signatures could be gathered in the time allotted means:

A) The petition organizers fouled up, or

B) Not enough people gave a shit, or

C) Both.

Recalling an elected official because of his sexual preferences is socially judgemental and has no relationship to his abilities in managing government.

I think Amicus will back up my memory on this mess. I don't live in Portland so it never really caught my eye.

Sam Adams was a city council member who ran for mayor when the old retired, died or something. It was during this time, I believe, that Adams had a "relationship" with the kid. Adams story was they were more than friends but never had sex until the day after the kid turned 21.

So a year later, the kid blew the whistle on Adams to the media. That's when the shit hit the fan. Suddenly "HE"S FUCKING GAY!" although Adams claims he was openly gay all along. In truth, Portland does have a large gay community. But who knew?

And yes, Amicus. This was a nice place to live.

Now there's a failed recall. Why? Probably because they didn't work hard enough at it. Now there's a new recall. Will it go through? Who the hell knows.

Actually, getting enough votes is the first step. Then there is an election, and the voters vote to either recall or not, and the election of a new mayor might or might be on the same ballot.

If the kid was under 18 as he says, I have to wonder why Sam Adams is not charged with a sex crime. Personally, I am pretty sure he was under 18 when the sex started, but I don't actually know.
