With Veteran's day coming up, I wanted to post this. Our college is the ONLY univ. I know that goes to school on that day. Now, I took a sememster off, so I have that day off, anyway,(don't go thinking I'm only wanting that day off because I don't wanna go to school.) I SERIOUSLY think it's an ABOMINATION. COMPLETELY DISRESPECTFUL to out Fellow American's that died for our freedom. We don't even have an assembly, or bow our heads to show some acknowledge of our Veterans.

Here we have ANZAC day.(Australian New Zealand Army Corps:
ANZAC was the name given to the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps soldiers who landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula in the East Mediterranean early on the morning of 25 April 1915 during the First World War (1914-1918).

As a result, one day in the year has involved the whole of Australia/New Zealand in solemn ceremonies of remembrance, gratitude and national pride for all our men and women who have fought and died in all wars. That day is ANZAC Day - 25 April.

In New Zealand all shops are closed in the morning of ANZAC day. Nothing is allowed to open at all till midday. There are dawn parades and lots of other things to show our respect to these brave people.

Yeah, well guess what our College in town did.

We got a new president... um... this is his first actual year, I believe, here. Anyway, he is a greedy lil son of a bitch. He squeezes money out from every source he can. Granted, we have alot of positive things happening because of it. But, back to what he did the other week.

Alot of his money comes from generous donations from parents of foreign students. Not like a huge majority, or anything, but a good deal of money.

Well, he felt that all the patorism shown at our school, and in this town, was intimidating the foreign students.

Last week, he ordered all students, and staff ro remove any american symbols of patorism. He felt it is interferring with forien students rights.

Is that bull shit, or what?

For starters, it is our constitutional right to display patriotic symbols. (I think... if not, it damn well should be).

Next, they choose to come to our school, on US soil. If they didn't want to see the stars and stripes, they could have attended elsewhere.

Finally, can he actually order something like that? I mean, that is discrimination isnt it?

That is NOT RIGHT!!!!!!!!!! Some people are just STUPID!!!!!!!!!!!!! btw, did you get my last PM? I think I delete it, before you were even allowed time to read it.

I did, and it said something really weird when I went to send a reply.

It told me I could not send a reply yet, because I am only allowed to send one message every 10 seconds?!?!?

Am I typing that fast tonight?

I hate to stomp all over your justifiable outrage but Veteran's Day celebrates veterans of all wars, not just those who died in service to their country.

Originally called Armistice Day to honor those who served in WWI, its name was officially changed to Veteran's Day after WWII and the Korean War swelled the ranks of people who served in the military.

There is another holiday...Memorial Day... which is set aside specifically to honor those who died. That was originally called Decoration Day - for the practice of decorating the graves of the Civil War dead.

Why I just turned into some pompous - old - blowhard - lecturing - History Channel fool is beyond me! Sorry. :)

Lest we forget

The Public Library in Whitby, near Toronto, banned veterans from selling poppies inside their branches. They claimed that if they allowed one charity, they must allow all.

Fortunately the people rose up, went to Council meeting and raised unholy hell with the decision. A clearly frightened, not to mention chastened Council, urged the Library Board to reconsider their decision. They did! I guess the sense of self-preservation is still very strong.

What amazes me is how these politically-correct pinheads can show such unbelievable ingratitude. These vets represent a generation that went to war for our freedom. They were all young men, late teens, early twenties, and died in the thousands just so that we could have morons insult their memories. Fortunately, the right to protest that they also preserved for us came to their aid.

They gave up their tomorrows for our todays, and I, for one, am very grateful to them!

My college does not get the day of either... and there are lots of Air Force people that attend this school. Its only 7 miles from an Air Force base

My son's school actually changed one of their days off to include the 12th of Nov. to celebrate Veterans Day.

They are also planning a program the Friday before.

I fully agree with your assessment of this action as bullshit.

What practical authority and means does he have to actually enforce it? This sounds like the perfect opportunity for a little Civil Disobedience and see if you can get the local news people to publicize the whole disgraceful thing.

Don't apologize. In fact, thanks for the education. While I'm old enough to remember Armistice Day, I did not know (or had fogrotten) about Decoration Day.

Bravo, Mensa. Well said.

Thanks Barb. I ALWAYS confuse Veteran's Day with Memorial Day.

Sorry nasty, I can't agree with you here. I attended school for 5 years up until May and never once did I get Veteran's Day off, nor did I get Columbus Day, President's Day or sever other holidays. Hell, most businesses don't shut down for those days, just the government, so why should universities close down?
