My baby sister (huh, she's over 50, but I'm not allowed to say how old), was diagnosed with MS just before her 21st birthday. It got worse very quickly. The day after her wedding, 29 years ago, she went from walking sticks to a wheelchair and has been in one ever since, with ever worsening symptoms.
Now, she's totally dependedent on other people to do everything for her. Her husband can no longer lift her weight, the last almost 30 years having taken their toll on his back, so she has carers that come to the house every morning and evening to get her out of bed, and put her back into it. Once she's in bed, that's it. There she stays until someone gets her out. Not a nice thought to be that vulnerable. She has very little use of any part of her body.......but her brain is still sharp as a tack. Her computer is her relief from insanity.
And her daughter, my god daughter, same age as my youngest son, was also diagnosed at 13. She is now in a wheelchair, but my word, what a stubborn young woman. She drives, goes on holiday wherever, has just started university, doing a law degree.....has done a bunjie jump.......she has grown up seeing how her mother has had to live, so I have this idea that she's cramming in everything she can before she too is reduced to the same state.
I take my hat off to anyone who has to live with MS, as a sufferer or a carer. Its a pernicious, indiscriminate disease and causes untold misery and pain.
I also thank deep in my heart, anyone who does anything, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem, that has the end result in finding a cure for this horrible disease.
Your effort was in no way insignificant. It was a major, mammoth effort.
For my sister, my niece.....and for you.......I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
